Description

World's Worst Place to be Gay? is a British documentary produced by Chris Alcock for the BBC which follows gay Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills as he travels to Uganda - where the death penalty could soon be introduced for being gay - to find out what it's like to live in a society which persecutes people like him and to meet those who are leading the hate campaign.

The documentary aired in the UK on BBC Three on 14 February, 2011. It is an hour long.

World's Worst Place to be Gay? aired in South Africa for the first time on SABC3 on Sunday 24 June 2012, at 20h30.

Synopsis

"The thing about most places I go to is it doesn't matter who you are... straight, gay, it's just not an issue. But what would it be like if being gay was an issue... an issue that could get you killed..."

With gay characters so prevalent on television, it's difficult to imagine that in some parts of the world homosexuality is still illegal and seen as sinful.

In this documentary, presenter Scott Mills (who is gay), travels to Uganda, a country that has recently proposed an anti-homosexuality bill that would introduce the death penalty for some homosexual acts.

Witnessing firsthand how these laws are reflections of the attitudes of many people in Africa, he asks how likely it is that the situation in Uganda will continue, and whether there is hope for equal treatment of gay men and women in Africa.

In Uganda Scott Mills meets up with the gay Radio One DJ and finds out what it's like to live in a society that persecutes people like him and meets those who are leading the hate campaign.

This documentary is a BBC production and is presented by Scott Mills, produced by Chris Alcock (Can I Get High Legally?, Cooking in the Danger Zone) and executive produced by Darren Kemp. Gian Quaglieni is the series producer.
