Synopsis
The very first years of a child's life is critical to their survival, growth, development and learning potential.
To have a fulfilling life, to get a decent job and to be a responsible member of society depends largely upon the foundation laid during the early years and the extent to which families and communities are supported to ensure children's healthy development.
In a new series for BBC World News, First Steps visits three countries - Brazil, Uganda and Moldova - to look at how investment in early childhood services and programmes provides real opportunities for breaking out of poverty and the chance to achieve far more than previous generations.
