About the Show

Low Winter Sun is a British two-part television mini-series created by Simon Donald and produced by Tiger Aspect Productions about a police detective who kills for revenge and naively believes he's engineered the perfect crime.

The mini-series originally aired in the UK on Channel Four on 14 September, 2006. There are two 90-minute episodes in the series.

Low Winter Sun aired in South Africa on DStv's BBC Prime channel on Friday 4 and 11 July, 2008, at 20h30.

Synopsis

In the back room of an Edinburgh restaurant, a man is murdered - brutally drowned in a tank of live lobsters. He is Detective Sergeant Brendan McCabe - on the face of it a hugely effective police officer, but in reality corrupt beyond redemption.

His killers are detectives Frank Agnew and Joe Geddes. Geddes has told Agnew how, the night before, he watched McCabe kill Agnew's lover - and now McCabe has paid the price.

Together they strap McCabe into his car, dump it in the sea and concoct an elaborate cover-up plan, confident that when the body is found, suicide will be the obvious verdict.

Having engineered the perfect crime, the two men are confident that when the body is found at sea, it will be ruled as suicide.

But the following day sees the arrival of the Police Complaints Department - McCabe is under investigation by his own superiors.

Another body is discovered in the boot of McCabe’s car and Agnew finds himself leading an investigation into a spate of murders, one of which he himself committed.

Agnew struggles to stay one step ahead of his own team as a gothic tale of violence and corruption unravels around him.

While trying to extricate himself from the nightmare it soon occurs to Agnew that Geddes had more than one reason for wanting to silence his corrupt partner after all...
