Gantz is a Japanese anime series based on the manga by Hiroya Oku and animated by Gonzo which tells the story of a teenager named Kei Kurono who dies in a train accident and becomes part of a semi-posthumous "game" in which he and several other recently deceased people are forced to hunt down and kill aliens.
The anime originally aired in japan on Fuji Television and in the USA on the Anime Network in 2004. There are 26 half-hour episodes in two seasons.
Gantz premiered in South Africa on DStv's Animax channel on Monday 21 April 2008, at 23h20. Episodes air Monday to Friday at the same time. There are 13 episodes in the first season.
Kei Kurono and his long-lost school friend Kato try to save an old man from train tracks. The pair are run over and think they've been killed but discover a whole new life awaits them.
The last thing Kei remembers is the train running over his body. Now he is in a room filled with strangers, all resurrected by the featureless black sphere known only as the Gantz.
But their reprieve from death may only be temporary, for unless they undertake the brutal missions that the Gantz assigns, all of them will die again.
In order to stay “alive” the captives must obey Gantz’s orders and undertake missions to eliminate elusive aliens.
