Mary Jensen is a beautiful-but-goofy tomboy with a heart of gold and a naive charm that both endearsd her to people and makes her a target of subversion.
Ted Stroehmann is a shy, nervous geek who fell in love with Mary at high school. He took her to the prom but had an unfortunate incident involving his zipper on the night, ending his dream of dating Mary nd making him the laughing stock of the town.
Thirteen years after his horrific prom night Ted is still infatuated with Mary and hires a private investigator called Pat Healy (Matt Dillon) to track her down.
Healy does so but once he finds Mary he becomes infatuated with her himself, and deliberately misleads Ted into thinking that Mary has grown overweight and unattractive in the intervening years.
What follows is a wild ride as not on Ted and Pat vye for the affections of the unsuspecting Mary, but every other nutty, lovesick guy as well.
