Charles was a college student who in exchange for free boarding became a live-in helper in the Pembroke household. At the end of the first season, the Pembrokes relocated and Charles stayed in the house and became the helper for the new family that moved in, the Powells.
The Powells consisted of a retired grandfather, the mother, teenagers Jamie and Sarah and ten-year old Adam. Their father was away in the navy.
As this comedy series progressed, Charles become more and more a part of the family. This brought with it many happy and funny times but also a few hiccups along the way.
In addition to his household duties, Charles also had to deal with being a college student and having his own life.
