13: Fear is Real is an American reality competition television series created by Gunnar Wetterberg and produced by Magic Molehill Productions, Inc. and Warner Horizon Television Inc. in association with Jay Bienstock Productions and Ghost House Pictures in which 13 contestants compete to "stay alive" while pitted against each other in situations from horror movies to win a grand prize.
The series aired in the USA on The CW from 7 January to 20 February, 2009. There are eight hour-long episodes in the series.
13: Fear is Real premiered in South Africa on DStv's M-Net Action channel on Wednesday 29 April 2009, at 19h00.
Thirteen people compete to "stay alive" as they face their deepest fears in an all-out elimination competition and scare-fest.
Pitted against each other in situations straight from the horror movies, the 13 will face shocking surprises, psychological scares and lots of "beware of the dark" moments, all designed by a "mastermind" of terror.
Each week, one unlucky victim will be "killed off" via frightening challenges and game-playing until only one person is left to win the grand prize of fittingly $66,666.
Each episode makes contestants face their fears through challenges devised by horror and action film creators.
Challenges include escaping from the boot of car while it's being compacted, getting out of a flooding room and being buried alive.
The show was executively produced by Jay Bienstock (Survivor, The Apprentice), Sam Raimi (the Spider-Man films, the Evil Dead films) and Robert Tapert (the Evil Dead films, The Grudge films).
