Emmah Makatu was born and raised in Pretoria, and after finishing her matric in 1989 she moved to Cape Town to pursue her studies in Commerce.In 1999 she became an Associate Member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).After working for Old Mutual and KPMG she went on and founded her first company: African Confidence Business Consulting (Pty) Ltd (ACBC), in 1998. ACBC specialises in accounting and tax services.In 2000 she started her second business - a water purifying concern called Blue Well, which imports water purification machines to some African countries.In 2003 she founded her third business; Zwinoni Lodge, a 3-star guest house in Milnerton Ridge.All three of her companies have scooped awards from different organisations including DTI, SA Tourism and SAB.
