Haas was born in West Hollywood, California, the son of Berthold Haas, a painter, and singer/songwriter Emily Tracy. He has twin brothers, Simon Jakoway, an accomplished artist, and Nikolai Johannes Haas, a musician.

At the age of five, he was discovered in his kindergarten by casting director Marjorie Simkin.

Haas first became known for his role as an Amish child who witnesses a murder in the 1985 Harrison Ford film Witness and 1983 movie Testament, playing one of the children; he later played the title role in the made-for-TV movie The Ryan White Story.

By his teenage years, he had appeared with Jessica Lange in the Music Box, and Steve Martin in Leap of Faith (1992). He was also in the play Waiting for Godot with Steve Martin and Robin Williams.

He appeared in the 2006 film Who Loves the Sun alongside Molly Parker and Adam Scott, in The Tripper (2006) as Ivan; and as Adam in Gardener of Eden (2007).

Haas is also a musician and has a MySpace Music page which features four songs, including "Kemp", and "In Between". He plays the drums and piano for a band called The Rogues.

He has appeared in My Chemical Romance's music video for "Welcome to the Black Parade," in which he plays the role of a patient.
