Madigan is probably best known for her role as Annie Kinsella in Field of Dreams (1989). She was born in Chicago, Illinois.In the 1960s, Madigan attended St. Philip Neri grammar school and Aquinas High School, both in Chicago, where she performed in school plays, and was known as the school tomboy.

She is the daughter of John Madigan, a media personality in Chicago, Illinois, who once hosted a Chicago TV show called Standpoint, and who last worked as the WBBM radio political editor and signed off with his signature, "News radio ssssssseventy-eight!"

Madigan was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in the 1985 film Twice in a Lifetime.From 2003 to 2005, Madigan starred in the HBO series Carnivale as Iris Crowe. She is also a political activist; among other things, she has served on the national board of NARAL Pro-Choice America, a pro-choicewomen's rights organisation.

Madigan has been married to actor Ed Harris since 1983. The couple have one child together, a daughter, Lily. Her film roles include Winter Passing (2005), The Discontents (2004), In the Land of Milk and Money (2004), Just a Dream (2002), Pollock (2000), Female Perversions (1996), The Prince of Pennsylvania (1989) and Alamo Bay (1985).
