Jesse L. Martin is an American actor best known for his roles as Tom Collins in Rent and as Detective Ed Green in the television drama series Law & Order, from 1999-2008.

Martin earned critical acclaim for his recurring role on Ally McBeal as Ally's boyfriend, Dr. Greg Butters.

Additional television credits include a guest starring role as a disenfranchised alien on The X-Files, a series regular on the series 413 Hope Street, and a guest-starring role on the Wolf Films/Studios USA series New York Undercover.

In 2005, Martin reprised his role of Tom in the film adaptation of award-winning musical Rent, having originated the role in the off-Broadway production at the New York Theatre Workshop and carried it through to the Broadway production.

In addition, Martin's film credits include Season of Youth, Restaurant, and The Cake Eaters. Martin will next be seen in the feature films Peter and Vandy and Buffalo Bushido.

He played the role of Philip Maidstone, Teddy's (James Purefoy) best friend and business partner, in the action series The Philanthropist, in 2009.

In 2014 he began starring in the superhero fantasy drama television series The Flash as Detective Joe West, a cop who acts as a surrogate father to Barry and is the father of Iris West.
