Bio

Cal Macaninch is a Scottish actor best known for his television roles as DI John Keenan in Holby Blue (2007-2008), as Rowan Collins in Wild at Heart (2009-2010) and as valet Andrew Lang in the period drama television series Downton Abbey, in 2011.

Macaninch is also known throughout the UK for his work in numerous popular British television series including Merlin and Waking the Dead.

A highly promising young soccer player, he first discovered acting at Glasgow University, where he studied philosophy after a knee injury ruined his prospects of playing for Celtic or Manchester United.

Macaninch is an avid runner and has competed in numerous marathons for charity; he says if not an actor he'd be an explorer or a mountaineer.

He and his wife, actress Shauna Macdonald, have two daughters, Jesi-Lilas and Ava-Red Amahle ("Amahle" means "beautiful" in Zulu).
