Insights into the past and present: Doc Martin debuted in 2004 with Martin Clunes playing the title role, a successful surgeon who developed a blood phobia and had to retrain as a GP. Arriving in the sleepy hamlet of Portwenn in Cornwall, the curmudgeonly doctor with zero interpersonal skills and no bedside manner struggled to fit in - and needed all the allies he could get to negotiate his way around village life, with often hilarious consequences. A quote from Martin Clunes as the curtain comes down after 18 years: “I will never get a job as good as this again… just in the sheer joy of it, not being in a city to film it, and being allowed to make something funny in front of a camera, which is my favourite work experience.”
