And now there are all sorts of reports about what "might" have happened...

This one claims the crew was shooting live rounds at beer cans for sport earlier in the day, a regular past time on sets apparently >>

'Rust' crew members reportedly used guns with live ammunition hours before deadly shooting on set

This one says that crew members complained and protested about the lack of safety protocols on set and that other gun misfires had already happened on set >>

And this one says the assistant director who handed Alec the gun was fired from a previous movie after a prop gun fired accidentally >>

I had no idea productions use live rounds on set! .. but now I don't think they do because this article says that it still isn't clear whether it was live ammunition or blanks in the gun and that blanks can kill at close range, so clearly none of the media actually knows anything solid >>

What are the safety protocols for guns on movie sets?

I wonder what actually happened though, did he take aim and pulled the trigger? Was he fooling around? Or did the gun discharge somehow? I see theres a press conference scheduled for today, all should be revealed then.

Interesting - thanks, will lookout for the news about it.

The impression I've had is that he was rehearsing for a scene where he had to point the gun at the camera but who knows, it's all been so full of speculation so bring on the press conference.
