From Ricki's blog; August 24 2007; 08:46: The Nationality issue - does it really matter? My rant. A few people have been getting worked up about whether Richard is Tanzanian or Ugandan, but honestly, this is Big Brother Africa, not Big Brother Tanzania, so personally, I think its most important to be an AFRICAN citizen, and not so much of an issue as to what nationality the housemate is. After all, BBA should unite and not divide Africans, right? As you may have seen, Linda has given the life story of Richard's family on some of the threads. To summarize for those of you who have not read it, Richard's Dutch/Boer Grandfather wandered the continent (I think he was a miner), and finally met Richard's grandmother, who was a Rwandan (Rwandese?) refugee living in Uganda. Richard's dad was born in Uganda, but lived in many places in Africa, he met Richard's Tanzanian mom when she was studying in Uganda (Linda, correct me if I'm wrong). They settled in Tanzania and Richard's dad became a Tanzanian citizen. Richard was born and raised in Dar, but he went to boarding school in Uganda for secondary. He came back to TZ after school and has lived there with this family ever since. So what does this make Richard? An African! He is a representation of the diversity of this continent, a continent that won't be limited by the colonially created national boundaries. Sure, he's a Tanzanian passport holder, and he loves his country, but BBA is about more than that. This game doesn't have to become a war between countries; Richard is Richard, he is not Tanzania's ambassador (we have one already), and he is not a representation of everything that is Tanzanian, because, really, there is no such person. He is there to play a game, just like the other house mates, many of whom also come from mixed national and ethnic backgrounds. Let's not put too much of a burden on the housemates, let them have their fun and let's support them, not because of the countries they come from, but because of how they play their game.
