On Carte Blanche: South Africa's death trap road

Coming up on Carte Blanche this Sunday 25 May 2025:

Koppies Kill Zone

It looks like a perfectly ordinary stretch of the N1 between Johannesburg and Kroonstad. But when it rains, this piece of highway turns into a death trap on which dozens of lives have been lost. The reason?

Questionable drainage, a complete lack of warning signs - and official silence.

As families endure unimaginable tragedy, what will it take to stop the disaster unfolding in plain sight?

Producer & Presenter: Anina Peens
.

The Great Chain Robbery

It comes as no surprise when valuable assets go missing from municipalities across South Africa. But there is a certain amount of irony in the disappearance of the mayoral chains.

Ornate, shiny and worth a lot of money, they’re the ceremonial uniform of the executive mayor.

So, who is nicking them? From a professional heist to an inside job, Carte Blanche investigates who could be helping themselves to the mayoral trappings of office.

Producer: Harri Vithi
Presenter: Masa Kekana

Living Memory

A Western Cape resident on a mission to discover his family’s origins. A veteran from Gauteng seeking out the graves of his Border War comrades.

Two very different people with very different pasts. But they share a common drive: to keep the memories of the dead alive.

Faced with overgrown cemeteries, vandalised headstones and fading memories, they recognise and celebrate those lying neglected in our graveyards.

For one man, a way of finding closure on a war he didn’t choose; for the other, a window into a long-forgotten past.

We meet two men preserving crumbling pieces of our history for generations to come.

Producer: Annalise Lubbe
Presenter: Govan Whittles

Premiere episodes of Carte Blanche air on M-Net on Sundays at 19h00 and are on Catch Up afterwards.
