Is it possible for the SABC to belong to us

It's been through so much turmoil and strife and literally needs to be rescued and maybe, just maybe, it can be saved by exciting, ambitious ideas and dedicated TV makers.

If you believe it can be, read on!...

The SABC has put out an open call to producers and content creators who'd like to submit proposals for TV shows in three genres: drama, entertainment and factual.

The shows will air on SABC1, 2 and 3.

Here's what you need to know if you want submit:

Eligible proposals

They're looking for submissions in either of these two categories:

1. 100% commissions

This means that the SABC will acquire the full rights and take ownership of the concept, programme, and all elements. They'll fully fund the development and production.

All content submissions for this category need to be emailed between 08h00 on 19 August and 16h00 on 16 September 2022.

Any submission before or after the timeframe won't be accepted.

2. Other commissions

They're also looking for shows that are funded by other means i.e. programmes they can license, shows that are fully funded by producers or advertisers and co-financed shows.

You'll find information about these categories on the SABC's website here: Content Submission

Submissions for this category also open on 19 August and will remain open indefinitely.

How to submit

- All submissions must be supplied in PDF format with all completed submission forms on the front of the submission with the proposal (not separate).

- All submissions need to be emailed to: commissioning@sabc.co.za

- All forms must be complete and signed.

- The SABC will send electronic receipts to producers 14 working dates after email submission. The timelines for response will be based on the volume of submissions received and will be communicated accordingly.

- All proposals must be submitted in English.

- If you have any enquiries you can send them to Thami Nyembe on this e-mail address: nyembet@sabc.co.za

Roadshows

The SABC will be promoting the open call with a provincial roadshow from 25 August to 26 September where they'll be engaging the industry about their content strategies and content needs.

The roadshows will be happening in these cities... we'll keep you posted on dates and venues:

- Cape Town
- Joziburg
- Mahikeng
- Bloemfontein
- Kimberely
- Polokwane
- Nelspruit

Hi everyone, a heads-up that the SABC has changed the submission e-mail address to commissioning@sabc.co.za - we've updated the article with the new one.

You'll see other e-mail addresses in some of the forms on the SABC website so it's confusing - don't use those. The SABC tells us that the commissioning e-mail address listed here is definitely the correct one to use.
