On Monday 5 April SABC3 premieres Orphans of a Nation, the first of three new telenovelas that start on the channel in the same week.

New episodes of Orphans of a Nation air from Mondays to Wednesdays at 18h30 and The Red Room occupies the timeslot on Thursdays and Fridays.

Both lead into new local telenovela The Estate at 19h00.

Orphans of a Nation is a Brazilian love story about refugees and immigrants who've fled their homelands for various reasons. Some have resettled for economic reasons or because of natural disasters while others have escaped political or religious persecution.

The main storyline centres round Laila (Julia Dalavia) and Jamil (Renato Góes) who escape from Lebanon to Brazil where they try to live the love that united them while they were still in the Middle East.

She's a Syrian refugee and he's an employee of the powerful Sheik Aziz Abdallah (Herson Capri), who forcedly took Laila as one of his wives when her and her family fled from Syria to Lebanon.

Laila and Jamil have fled to safety but they still aren't safe because the Sheikh's daughter Dalila (Alice Wegmann) follows them to Brazil, intent on revenge after her father's mysterious death.

This from SABC3 about it:
Orphans of a Nation is a telenovela about diversity, empathy, love and the unity of people.

It shows that these people arrived, arrive and will continue arriving in Brazil, a country whose tradition is to welcome and peacefully coexist with differences, in order to restart their lives.

Despite their difficulties, they bring their cultural heritage which has enriched and become part of the Brazilian nation.

3 flash facts:

1. It's original Brazilian name is Órfãos da Terra.

2. It won the 2019 Rose d'Or and 2020 International Emmy Award for Best Telenovela.
