Series Review: Watchmen Episode 3

Episode 3 of Watchmen was in a very giving mood, especially for fans of the comic books. It brought back Silk Spectre 2, now going with her father's surname as Laurie Blake, it gave us a definite answer as far as Jeremy Irons is concerned and introduced a new conflict between Sister Knight and Laurie Blake. Let's dig in...

Damon Lindelof and his writing team took a different tack with Episode 3 - we didn't have an opening that's linked to an historical event. Instead we are introduced to Laurie Blake (Jean Smart) as an FBI agent, entrapping vigilantes. The vigilante she brings down in the opening is a call-back to DC's Batman.

The irony is, in the comic book we left Laurie going off with the second Nite Owl to live incognito but something seemed to have happened. She is now indebted to the FBI and working off a debt by taking down vigilantes whilst Nite Owl is in prison and she is now hung-up on Dr.Manhattan, hence the gigantic blue dildo.

One of the cool things the series has built on from the comic book and Zack Snyders' movie is showing that Laurie has accepted The Comedian as his father by taking on his surname. Something she struggled with in the comics because she was a product of rape.

One of the great revelations of Episode 3 has to do with the indentity of Jeremy Irons' character, whom it has been confirmed, is Veidt a.k.a Ozimandias... the man behind the hoax that helped quell the simmering war between the Russians and the Americans in 1985 where the original story is based.

The reveal of true identity, which is completed with him wearing the full comic costume opened up other questions: Where is he? When is he? Is imprisoned on Mars? Who has imprisoned him? These questions will hopefully get answers soon.

The other big question one takes away from the episode is: will Laurie and Angela end-up on opposite sides? Laurie clearly knows everything about Angela and she isn't a fan of hers nor of anyone who wears a mask. She doesn't buy the current circumstances of Judd's death.

With only 6 episodes left... the plot is definitely thickening.
