The inclusive, progressive and sustainable development in the maritime sector can only be driven by the private sector. Companies can create a positive impact in the industry by improving and growing the development of SMMEs as part of their strategy. Corporates can assist government to achieve this by including the development of small business into their value chains.

Assisting the small businesses to achieve sustainability and growth is vital for both the growth of  the industry and competitiveness of local suppliers. SMMEs play a critical role for the creation of sustainable employment, raising productivity and achieving inclusive economic growth and social cohesion.

These SMMEs will play a critical role in the future for job creation. This is the reason why enterprise and supplier development programmes are important around the world.

Benny Bhali says "Around 80% of South Africa's start-ups fail within three years and this is largely attributed to lack of support. However, through nurturing the survival rate of this emerging enterprises increases significantly, Hence we need to establish more business incubation programs especially in the maritime sector"

Enterprise Supplier Development

The Amended B-BBEE Codes of Good Practice came into effect on 1 May 2015. This means that any business that has a turnover of more than R10 million per annum and that participates in B-BBEE will have to comply with these Amended Codes. Although B-BBEE is absolutely voluntary, it is going to become difficult to avoid if a business is main stream, irrespective of what your turnover is.

One of the easiest ways to earn points is through the Enterprise and Supplier Development Element. This Element counts for 40 points on the Generic Scorecard and for 30 points on the Qualifying Small Enterprise (QSE) Scorecard. The reason it is easy to score points because there are three sub-elements that a business can score points on each one of them. The three sub-elements are:
  1. Preferential Procurement;
  2. Supplier Development and
  3. Enterprise Development.
Preferential Procurement will dictate who your suppliers are going to be in future - new stringent requirements around Preferential Procurement will force businesses to broaden their supplier database. Supplier Development has become very important because businesses are going to struggle with their Preferential Procurement and therefor they will need to develop Suppliers to fulfil their supply chain needs. Enterprise Development will become increasingly critical to feed the Supplier Development as well as the Preferential Procurement supply chain.

Project Partnerz (Pty) Ltd is a specialist in the ESD programs for the maritime sector, and the company is working with the number of clients to assist them put programs in place that will allow them to add value in the sector and also score full 40 points in their BEE score-card.

Businesses serve a critical role in driving more inclusive and sustainable development. Large companies can create positive impact by improving and growing development. Corporates can achieve this by including small business into their value chains and local communities.
