Top Shows on TV: February 2017

Last month Uzalo, Generations and Skeem Saam were nowhere to be seen on SABC2 and 3's January Top 20 TAMS lists when the three soapies moved from SABC1 during AFCON.

Now, suddenly, they're at the top of the lists on both channels for February.

This means that their viewership plunged by MILLIONS from Monday, 16 January (when they moved to SABC2 and 3) to Tuesday, 31 January and then shot back up by MILLIONS from Wednesday, 1 February to Friday, 3 February, which is when their run ended on SABC2 and 3.

Which is extremely unlikely and highly suspicious.

When the three soapies failed to appear on SABC2 and 3's lists in January TVSA asked the Broadcast Research Council (BRC), who compile the TAMS, if they were excluded from the SABC2 or 3 lists for any reason and the BRC's Research Director Setshwano Setshogo assured us that they weren't purposely left out.

And now all three have made the Top 20 lists. But only in February.

This means that the only conclusion we can come to is that the BRC's compilation of the numbers is dodgy and misrepresentative of what happened in January or February or both.

All we can do is speculate about what happened instead of looking at the numbers for research and clarity, which is what these numbers are supposed to provide. It makes it impossible for a researcher to use the Top Shows lists for a thesis.

When it comes to numbers, every detail is crucial so there can't be discrepancies and the fact that there's such a big one undermines the integrity of the numbers.

When you speculate about what happened your mind moves to dark places and you wonder... if the January lists were incorrect, why has no-one bothered to correct them? If they weren't, why have they suddenly changed? What's going on with the numbers that we can't see?

These are dark places dear reader. Places we don't want to go but this is what happens when numbers don't add up. It has a dramatic impact on the television landscape because it gives a distorted picture.

We suspect that the February numbers are closer to the truth than January because of how extreme the plunge in numbers was last month but there's no way of being certain so please read the numbers at your own risk.

Besides this situation, you'll see that there are other discrepancies. Mzansi Magic's Lockdown has been included twice in DStv's Top 30 list. It's the only show to be included twice while every other show is only included once, except for repeats. It's described as a Movie in its first mention and it changes to a Drama in its second.

Isidingo also appears twice, but is listed as an Omnibus and a Movie in the second mention, which is impossible because it aired on a Wednesday night for half an hour. This happened last month too.

The fact that these two are mentioned twice, means that the shows that should have been in 20th and 30th positions on each list respectively, have been left off, which further distorts the picture and makes it unfair for the shows that have been excluded.

Also notable: SABC1's Sunday night drama Ingozi has over 3 million viewers while Zaziwa is nowhere to be seen on SABC1's Top 20 list after its move to Sunday nights which means it has plunged from its 3.5 million viewers in January.

But has it?

These are the lists... if you can't see the listing below, then click this link to access them in a document instead: Top shows on TV: February 2017.

wow so generations boosted sabc3 with 4million+ viewers which means aside that not everyone have access to the channel bt it can manage to attract the 7million viewers sabc1 has in 20:00

Bathong Generations had 4million on SABC 3 of all channels .this amazing .which means people do have sabc 3 it is just not black enough .Uzalo at 7million on 2 beating muvhango .this means january figured were total fake .sabc needs to revamp sabc 3 .there is potential there .they need an Nguni soapie at 7h30 pm .it can do well i think .move Anele's show to six pm .look how well Top Billing is doing.

Could Top billing figure's have something to do with the fact that Generations played at an earlier timeslot on 3 not at 8 on sabc 1

Generations slayed on SABC 3 even though less South Africans have that channel. It beat Scandal's ratings. And survived even though it did not play at it's regular timeslot. An advantage that Skeem Saam and Uzalo had. Generations beat the odds! Yas! That's a titanic show right there!

Also, to those who tried to defend Isidingo's poor ratings by saying VERY few viewers have SABC 3. Generations just proved that more than enough viewers have SABC3. They just don't like watching Isidingo.

Scandal only got that 4.4 mil when Generations was back at 20:00. It failed to get that number when it was still competing with Generations on the 2nd of Feb. Fact.

They killed Zaziwa cz i dont see it in the top 20 on sabc 1 mos.i am guessing 7de laan is not doing well at 18:00 .

if they say 3 million viewers does that mean the TV's that are switched on by that particular time or people who are physical watching the show?

Something definitely off with these ratings. How reliable are they? I mean, all three shows failed to make it on TAMS top 20 on sabc 2 and sabc 3 respectively, for the whole month of January, all of a sudden (BOOM), they perform exceptionally well in February? I hope these ratings aren't manipulated to trap advertisers and viewers. Who can we trust NOW in telling us the truth about TV ratings? Is there an independent body that regulates/audit these ratings.

Anyway, for some reason i am glad that skeem saam on sabc 2 and generations on SABC 3 made it to the TAMS TOP 20 --- Even though its suspicious. *faint laughter*

@Tvsa in reply to "Isidingo also appears twice, but is listed as an Omnibus and a Movie in the second mention, which is impossible because it aired on a Wednesday night for half an hour. This happened last month too." ---->>>> On the 7th of February 2017 isidingo was broadcasted twice at 21:30 and on 22:00 - this caused #TrendingSA to fall off, it definetly was not on the 1st of February as the BRC has stipulated. I remember this because i tweeted about it. SEE THE REPLIES ON THIS TWEET from THE sabc3 twitter account ---->>> https://twitter.com/SABC3/status/828990486635507712 .

I am loving LOCKDOWN and Saints and Sinners i see they are both doing great in terms of ratings. I hope they gets renewed for other seasons.

I see the 7 de laan has made it to the top 20 with 2.4 mil whilst it was still broadcasted at 19:00, i can safely say the moving of 7 de laan to 18;00 was a bad move from the sabc.

@fratpack I am also loving Lockdown and Saints and Sinners. But I watch Lockdown on Sundays after S&S which works out well for me.
