Coming up on Carte Blanche this Sunday (17 July 2016):

Terror’s Tentacles

Four young Muslims were arrested this week amidst allegations of recruitment for the Islamic State and plans to target American and Jewish institutions in South Africa. Carte Blanche asks: how have international terror networks extended their tentacles into South Africa to recruit militant young adults for the cause?

Producer: Graham Coetzer
Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender
Researcher: Laura Byrne

Rubble Queen

Disposing of illegally dumped building rubble costs municipalities up to a billion rand each year. Dubious transporters bypass allocated landfill sites and dump directly onto open suburban areas, so netting bigger profits.

Carte Blanche goes on the trail of Pretoria’s own Rubble Queen, a serial dumper whose fleets of trucks are regularly seen defacing the city’s suburbs.

Producer: Nicky Troll
Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender

Marabastad: Asylum Seekers’ Nightmare

Getting refugee status from the Marabastad Department of Home Affairs should mark the start of a new life for asylum seekers, who flock to South Africa from as far afield as Syria. But, claims by Home Affairs that the registration process has been streamlined are in stark contrast to applicants’ experiences of a journey fraught with bribery, corruption and abuse. Carte Blanche investigates.

Producer: Sasha Schwendenwein
Presenter: Bongani Bingwa
Researcher: Sinethemba Nogude

Opera’s Own Olympics

The Belvedere International Singing Competition, recently held in Cape Town, is considered the ‘Olympics of Opera’. The event attracted more than 1 000 young singers from 70 countries. Carte Blanche catches up with previous winner and world opera star Pretty Yende, and meets local talent hitting all the right notes from Milan to the Met!

Producer: Carol Albertyn Christie
Presenter: John Webb

Google Trekker

Intrepid explorers hauling a 22 kilogram Google Trekker camera on their backs capture the spectacular natural beauty of local wilderness areas like never before. Carte Blanche heads off the beaten track.

Producer: Liz Fish
Presenter: John Webb

Carte Blanche is on M-Net on Sundays at 19h00 and on M-Net Plus at 20h00.
