Who's who in the Idols Top 16

On Sunday night (23 August) the Idols judges made the most important decision of the competition so far when they chose the Top 16 who'll be singing for viewer votes at the weekly performance shows.

Amanda Antony
Age:
22
In 2013 Amanda made it to Sun City when Unathi gave her a Golden Ticket in PE after Algoa FM spotted her singing talent, but then she bombed out during Hell Week. She has recently completed her Music Studies at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. 
Bridgitt Leahy
Age: 18
Bridgitt was first noticed by the judges when she performed an original song at the Durban auditions. She hails from Creighton in the Southern Drakensberg and currently lives with her mom in Pietermaritzburg, where she is being home-schooled. 
Dineo Moseki
Age: 21
Dineo lives in Vryburg with her sisters and nieces and nephews, where she works as a full-time professional singer. She's been singing all her life, in school choirs and church choirs, and turned professional in 2012.
Elwira Standili
Age: 22
Eliwra is from Worcester and gave up her Management Assistance studies when she won her Golden Ticket at the Cape Town auditions.
Karabo Mogane
Age: 24
Karabo is from Nelspruit and studied Geoinformatics at the University of Stellenbosch before getting into Top 16.
Loyiso Gijana
Age: 16
Loyiso is from Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape and is the youngest singer in the competition. Up until now he's been a learner at Muir College in Uitenhage.  
Lungisa Xhamela
Age: 24
Lungisa is from Langa in the Cape and has given up his studies in medical bioscience at the University of the Western Cape to pursue his musical dreams full-time. He has a two-year-old daughter.
Mmatema Moreni
Age: 23
Mmatema is from Limpopo and is a qualified professional linguist who speaks four languages. Before she entered Idols she also worked as a part-time marketing assistant and worked for her church on the side.
Nadia Herbst
Age: 20
Nadia is a Business Management student from Paarl who has two titles under her belt: Miss Teen Cape Town and Miss Teen Western Cape.
Nina Terblanche
Age: 17
Nina is from Nelspruit, where she is a Grade 10 scholar who takes music as a school subject. She also sings in the school choir and competes in Eisteddfods.
Phila Madlingozi
Age: 25
Phila is an musician and actor who is best known to TV audiences for his roles as Zithembe/Zolile on Intersexions and as Thabiso on Mutual Friends.
Rhema Varrie
Age: 21
Rhema was encouraged to go into music by his father, a pastor, who spotted his potential at an early age. Rhema is currently a financial advisor who supports his extended family.
Ruan Grobbelaar
Age: 24
Ruan Grobbelaar is from Somerset West and was studying software development at the University of Stellenbosch when he won his Golden Ticket at the Cape Town auditions.
Shenay O’Brien 
Age: 25
Shenay is the first drag queen to make it to the show's voting rounds. Prior to Idols, Shenay shared a home in Roodepoort with her creator, former Tshwane University of Technology drama student and performer Thiart Li.
Siphelele Ngcobo
Age: 24
Siphelele is from Durban and has been making his living as a singer since 2012. He studied classical singing at school and has subsequently been focusing on gospel and jazz in his hometown of Inanda, near Durban, where he lives with his mother and siblings.
Thami Shobede
Age: 27
Thami hails from Mthubathuba but is currently based in Johannesburg, where he worked for Transnet before making it to the Top 16. He also plays the bagpipes - a skill he learned while being in the Defence Force.

Flash fact: 29-year-old hopeful Nonhle Mhlongo was supposed to be in the Top 16 but withdrew from the competition because of a clash of commitments.

She signed a recording contract a couple of months ago and wasn't able to organise a temporary release from it to pursue Idols. For the ins and outs, see this interview with her: Nonhle withdraws from Idols 11

The judges gave her spot to Amanda Antony.

Amanda deserved a spot in the top 16 in the first place. I must say though, she should really be thankful to her ancestors... Yho how lucky she was! Im happy with the top 16 mara!
