SAFTAs 2015: highs and lows

The annual South African Film and Television Awards took place at Gallagher Estate in Midrand this past Sunday, hosted by the tallest and funny-man Loyiso Gola. Kicking it off with light jokes about black and white people… and of course Oscar Pistorius, Gola eased and warmed the audience into the show.

Throughout the ceremony Loyiso was throwing serious shade at stars, from calling Terence Bridgett “actress” to publicly announcing that Khanyi Mbau was stripped of her Lamborghini to asking Minnie Dlamini whose brilliant idea it was for her to shoot a calendar in 2015. Although some of his jokes were cringeworthy and somewhat below the belt, he still managed to hold it together despite his regular autocue calamities.

The opening performance by The Soil and gogo Abigail Kubeka was epic. Everything. The Stage was soooo big though, so much space was unused and winners took a long time walking from their seats to the podium. It just felt like the organizers were desperate to fill the space in the hall, not even the dancers could plug up that stage.

I arrived a bit late to the venue after most stars had hit the red carpet due to some accident on M1, with my lack of a proper camera but I managed to get a few pics for our very loyal bloggers… Indulge:

Had a quick chat with Busi Lurayi, and I tell you this woman is the queen of funny. She kept on saying people on the red carpet did not expect her to be shy.

I was so happy Masasa Mbangeni won. I had to congratulate her like a thirsty groupie. She is really talented and deserved that horn. Hold that horn high lady! Her speech was also very touching, very Lupita-Oscar-esque.

The very pregnant Miss Black Coffee and the Coffee himself.

Stole a Marjorie Langa snap backstage during an interview with vivacious e.tv Craze presenter. She looked like she did not at all expect to win at all… like she didn’t even know she was nominated ..

The ever-shining Christophers. I must say I prefer Kgomotso Christopher with this typa-hairdo.

Jessica Nkosi can do nothing wrong. God was in a GREAT mood when He made her.

Was I the only one who was shocked when Katlego Maboe beat-up autocue queens and kings like Queen B*, Phat Joe and Bujy? Not that Katlego isn’t good, but it was unexpected. Right? Clearly SABC 3 viewers have a huge voting power.

Letoya Makhene (formerly Mangezi).

Isibaya stays winning. This is the some of its crew and cast after winning Best Soap Opera.

Managed to score a quick snap backstage of the Lifetime Achievement winner Marius Weyers...

It was VERY sad that Brenda Ngxoli wasn’t at the awards to receive her two Golden Horns. She would have been the star of the night. Does anyone know if SAFTA winners get money too?
Thanks to the SAFTAs for the invite and may they kindly remember us again next year.

It's Brenda Ngxoli. If you keep misspelling people's names you might not get an invite next time.
