To Kasi or not!

Thanks to Green Arrow, i have found a platform to which i wanted to adress my initial article.

After being told on several occasions that one should know where they come from, i often wondered what the line meant.

In seeking the answers, family background always came to the fore as one of the main factors that determines who one is and basically where they are comming from.

In Most cases, if you are black somehow it is deemed (by the black society at large) that have to have your roots tied to 'Kasi' or 'magaeng' for which failure to do so, one is then regarded as snob and a whole lot of names.

Nonetheless, morals and values that one is taught from infancy (for which i believe forms greater part of who one is) are largely placed aside as society at large seems to be still tied and narrow minded to believe that one's background should characterise who one is.

For instance, i used to find it very weired that whenever we visited my grandparents i was not allowed to wear a hat in the house or inside the yard for that matter. Furthermore, i was often called a disobidient child because i used to question everything unlike my cousins who never questioned anything and took blame for everything even if they were not wrong.

The funny part about everything (as i tried to weigh the these values) was the fact that back at home i was regarded as clever as the community i grew up in was all about that independence and standing up for what you believe in.

Now, from bloggers what i want to know is what are the characteristics that forms who one is?

Secondly, what signifigance does one's background have to do with who one is?

*hope i tried to be clearer this time*

@realist-

1. Given the fact that i obviously know who i am, what is the main fuss 'knowing where you come from'? and bear in mind the saying that says 'its not about where you are from but where you are goin'

2. What substance does 'know where you come from crad' add in such a 'dog eat dog capitalistic environment'?

3. And from the depth of the depth of your heart, would you like to stay at 'ekasi' for any reasons???

4. Lastly, why is that everything that is supposed to reflect South Africa has to be 'Kasi- fied' or 'Soweto- fied'?

Kasi or magaeng or wherever...at most i think that is superficial.
We may come from the same Kasi...but the idea of "were we come from" will differ because of our unique experiences as families/individuals.
Where I Oliver Green.arrow Quinn come from is a combination of kasi, magaeng, my family, the church that raised me, my neighbours, the schools i attended, all my experiences (good and bad ones) etc. And i WILL NOT forget all that because it informs my morals and my convictions, etc...where i come from informs the manner in which i go where i am going.

Im reminded of  Cuba Gooding Jr's character in The Fighting temptations or whatever...it was his memory of where he came from (the location, the people, the spirit etc)  that ultimately influenced his decision on whether to keep the lucrative ad exec job heading liqour company campaigne that was destroying his peopl or the choir back home.

There is more to where you come from than the location...

@ tzhavile
Of the four points you mentioned only one is relevant to your topic and yet it is not the substance of the topic.

I still want to know what is your point regarding ekasi. You haven’t given any reason why you don’t like ekasi except coming with a quote from the movie about somebody hating the hood.

Here is the qoute 'I didnt like it then and i dont like now', the 'snobish' side of me took the center stage as cheering on the character. Is that the reason you don’t like ekasi?

Read MaWinza’s article about ekasi and maybe you can pick some of the points you don’t like about ekasi.

I must say that I am sightly confused by the author's comparison with Sanna Latham character in the movie. The character's dislike for the ghetto goes deeper than that. She grew up there and she knew that she had to work very hard to get out whereas with you, you just had to pack your bags and go back home to whence you came from. For her to get out she had to work hard. Well in the end I don't think she would have hated it so much had she had money

@realist--- the is no substance whathsoever for Tzhavile for this topic except wanting to rub on our faces that he is a snob, everybody these days is fighting to be called a snob.. it's the 'IN' word for 2010.

Almost every black affording citizen is living in the suburbs and few are making sure that we know they never moved in there in the 'BEE era' they were born there like the author, so yes  now we know. Thanks.

This topic if it is a topic , reminds me of the  many articles we get from whites who are leaving South Africa for greener pastures. Before they leave they make sure they 'paint'  every reason why they can't stay here anymore and in that process they criticize Mzansi  so much that they go to an extend of similirasing it to Zimbabwe, Tzavile somehow you reminded me of them after reading this!!!!
