I know that DSTV subscribers have already acquainted themselves with the whole MTV Cribs concept, but why would SABC overplay the series.
If you are lost, then let me fill you in. It so happened that this past Saturday, I was channel surfing and somehow I landed on SABC 3, in the late afternoon, presumably after 5pm. It was quite interesting to see that SABC 3 was screening MTV Cribs.
Later on, at about 6pm, I was channel surfing again and I landed on SABC 1. Guess what was on? MTV Cribs.
And like a three-fold Devaju, MTV Cribs had just played on MTV or was it MTVBase, I can’t recall, my head is still spinning from this entire replay.
I found this to be rather awkward…
What is the logic behind buying a show from another channel and flighting it on two similar channels, at almost the same time?
It was my first time seeing MTV Cribs on SABC, so I’m not certain if it always plays on both SABC channels, but from a press release I saw, MTV Cribs was intended for SABC 3.
In the spirit of recognising local content, it would have been more fitting to have one of the SABC channels flight MTV Cribs (SABC 3 – as originally planned) and have “Mzansi Cribs” on the other. Don’t get me wrong, I’m pro the idea of MTV Cribs being flighted on SABC, it’s a marvellous show, we just need to have our own local version.
It can be done. Vuzu seems to be pulling it off with Top Shayela.
Speaking of Top Shayela, last week’s episode was looking into Bonang’s fabulous life on the Fab Lane or is it the Bee Lane. It showcased her house, car, shoe and clothing collections; and also gave us a glimpse of her work.
As South Africans we generally complain about everything under the sun. This would be a good time to give credit where it’s due. I’m loving the fresh production behind Top Shayela. Yes, the concept might not be original, but they sampled it very well.
It also goes without saying that young ladies like Bonang are an inspiration and proof that it’s possible to live on the fabulous side of life. Big Ups to her for all the hard work.
Whilst we are still on fabulousity. I hope all the Top Shayela’s are saving up or investing their a portion of their earnings. We are tired of success stories gone wrong.
We want these success stories to be permanent, minus future front page “So and so is broke” stories. Thank You.
