Top 10 Actors of our time

After the heated give-and-take on the Top 10 Best actresses of our time, I believed it was only fair we have the actors too; below you will find the Top 10 as identified by myself. Y’all are invited to strut your opinions on my ramp. Let’s get wicked!

1. Fana Mokoena
Fana is an actor of note, he can play elusive, mysterious, psycho and heartless - I am pretty sure he would pull a sangoma too. He is an epitome of genuine versatility. I will agree that he isn’t very gifted in the looks department, but he can bring the house down. I personally don’t see him in a lead-role, he just needs to be in a show and he outstands behind those leads. From his days on Yizo Yizo playing the ever-angry/weirdo/geek to his obsessed and psychotic days as Dr Mandla Sithole on Generations, Fana Mokoena has excelled and matured with time. #RogerThat!

2. Jamie Bartlett
Mention a Genuis and Rhythm City’s David Genaro comes to mind. This is one actor who knows how to captivate the viewers. That perfect English and the continuous horrible puns in his speech, and throw in that manipulative demeanor, Jamie is a gem of an extreme quality. From his days on Isidingo Jamie Bartlett has grown to become a phenomenal actor who makes a villainous role look effortless. He becomes the villain. Robert De Niro and Al Pacino can take a #ChillPill!

3. Vusi Kunene
Where do I start with this man though? HARD! Can I say that Vusi Kunene is talented without any fear of ciber attacks? There’s just absolutely no role that this man cannot command, his talent is limitless and the charm he brings in his performances are enough get ladies to swoon and to score him a spot on my list. His career graph includes roles in “Justice for all”, “Generations”, “Jacob’s Cross” to name a few and he has nailed each and every role. Vusi doesn’t have to forcefully shove his acting down our throats, when he gets into a character, he is #Believable!

4. Robert Whitehead
Robert represents flexibility. He can play anything from a drag queen to a villain. Brilliant in both comedic and dramatic roles he is a force to be reckoned with. I still think he is the best thing that has ever happened to Isidingo, his portrayal of the devious Barker Haines is unforgettable and spot on… you just fall in love with his work. I give him 5 pink stars, #ThatsAll!

5. Rapulana Seiphemo
Rapulana rocks! He does every scene with ease and he makes acting look natural. He is the TALENT. I can imagine him doing different roles and smacking them real hard as most roles he played were rather hooligan. Nobody can do gangster roles like Seiphemo does, but wait, nigga can rock a tux, hit the boardroom and nail the role. He is a rare genus in this industry. Much #R.E.S.P.E.C.T!

6. Sello Maake Ka-Ncube
Against one of the bloggers tshavile, I take the plunge and put Sello in this top 10. I first watched him as Dr Mashoba-a-dieta on "Bophelo ke Semphekgo". This man’s talent has sparkled with every performance; his theatre background also comes to play in his tv roles, It looks exaggerated (or one can call it Over-acting) but the emotions he put in his acts are hell-real and you just get sold. Sello is simply incomparable. True, he does turn to ‘Over-act’ but it still goes down well. Bratt Pitt and the rest can #SitDown!

7. Menzi Ngubane
Most will agree with me, but as cliché’ as this is, Menzi is undoubtedly one of Msanzi’s best actors. Back from his role in a zulu drama “Ubambo Lwami” when the only English I could speak was “Good Morning Mam”, the man has come a long way and he has grown to be a finest jewel. His portrayal of Sibusiso Dlomo has scored him more fans, credibility and a nomination in prominent categories, Menzi is undeniably an icon. #NuffSaid!

8. Ronnie Nyakale
We all remember Papa Action from Yizo Yizo 1, right? nodding already? Cool. Now this man is underrated, can I hear a halleluya? I could go on and on, but Ronnie (in spite of his rough exterior) has continually pushed his creative limits. Let’s face it, this dude can act. He has gathered a lot of buzz as Ding Dong on Rhythm City and there’s no question that he is Spectacular. Haters can #CalmDown!

9. Patrick Ndlovu
He currently plays Ntate Moloi on Zone 14, his eyes alone will send a 10 year old running for cover and his emotions would complete a 2 minutes scene and still entertain. He can play a manipulative, strong role and make it so believable. He is a genie in a bottle, top-notch and very faultless, he’s the type you’d love to hate and his work is remarkable. The Diabolic nature he brings in his performances just makes one cringe. Patrick Ndlovu is just #OnPoint!

10. Mlangeni Nawa
Mlangeni is a timeless and legendary talented actor. His acting is still relevant ‘til now. Not really sure if I can call him versatile but from his roles as Mhlogo kwi “Hlala kwa bafileyo” to his current role as the horny old Zeb Matabane on Isidingo, Mlangeni continues to deliver flawless, consistent and epic acting. His name definitely deserves to be on the wall of fame! Let’s all say #Amen!

Let’s hear your favorites. There’s a stream of young actors that came to mind but didn’t make the cut. Bring yours to the table and let’s rant!

At least have a special mention for Anthony Bishop http://www.tvsa.co.za/actorprofile.asp?actorID=1550 - he has impressed me with every role he plays. Understandably this is an opinion piece and this time, unlike the actresses part, I agree with you completely (and even on the order) I think both Top 10 lists deserve the special mention section.

I would take out Sello Maake ka Ncube - so overrated for me. Rapulane - not so great, I will put him as a number 10, he has presence which is not talent is how you look and walk. But talent - not so much. He plays all his characters the same way.

Fana has always been my ultimate guy in South African acting

Sello and Rapulana..a Big Fat NOOOO!!..overrated and popular...Limited acting range... When Rapulana does these body and head movements when he talks in a scene...its annoying like he can only convinvce you thru that kind of phsyical acting even when its not necessary....just not good

Seputla, is Good. and so is Fana Mokoena.

24 Nov 2011 15:24

My problem is that most of these guys are stereotyped.
done wll in one type of role and they remain casted in the same type of roles forever.
we need to see them in different kinds of roles to either prove or disprove their talent.
That is why Fana is the top of my list. going from that troubled geek in yizo yizo to the horribly boring Dr. Mandla is top class.

Sobza
24 Nov 2011 15:25

Here's my Top 10 list in no particular order

1. Robert Whitehead
2. Jamie Bartlett
3. Seputla Sebogodi

7. Rapulana Seiphemo

I totally agree on the two of then.

I would replace them with Putla Sehlapelo and Kenny Mash.

Otherwise I agree with most of them. For me Jamie is the number one! He has improved so much from his Isidingo days.

24 Nov 2011 15:32

@Sobza, Terrence Bridget is such a talented actor!!

24 Nov 2011 15:39

Thanks Taz....if you remove Sello then the lista is wondeful. There are too many of them good actors.

I have a question though guys:
If an actor always excels on badguy roles is that being the best actor. I have not in the past seen Ronnie Nyakale play a good guy, so if i see him playing a Pastor and excelling, he will get 5 stars from me but for now, no.

I want to see Vusi Kunene acting a sangoma role, Ronnie acting a pastor etc.
Raphulana acts the same, irrespective of the role. That worries me.

Hi guys > Hello Boni :-)

I think Meshack Mavuso is a good actor as well > Yep he is .......remember when he played Javasi he played it so well I forgot he was acting and Look at him now as Vusi ?! you'd never say its the same person and I call that a versatile actor !

Tazteeq
24 Nov 2011 16:40

@ mbulelo : I want to see Vusi Kunene acting a sangoma role, Ronnie acting a pastor

aaaahhh, but thats like saying you expect to see Connie Ferguson play a prostitude...but Hollywood actors are gangster like that, most can pull any role, not that im saying ours cant...

Mishack Mavuso, Jet Novuka, Suffocate, Eric Myeni, Terrence Bridgette, Seputla Sebogodi are also excel in their craft. them and many more not being on this list doesnt make them any less talented! Remember this is to cause a safe and healthy debate :-)

I like your list Taz! Great article. Cool all the way. Kwaaaaaaaaaa @ Zeb being very horny *dead*!!!!!! ROTFL!!!!!! Mina yazi shem, I agree with this list. Dor me, the young actors need to still prove their longevity in the industry. Suere young actors like Nat Singo (Themba) Jafta Mamabolo are talented (Think Jerusalem), they still need to prove they can do a whole lot more. Or maybe Taz can still do a list on most promising actors. I love the list mina. Great writing Taz!!!

mbulela
25 Nov 2011 08:37

aaaahhh, but thats like saying you expect to see Connie Ferguson play a prostitude...

but it is a settled case that she is a very average actress. sos i don't expect her to act anything else.
Mishack Mavuso is one damn good actor.

25 Nov 2011 10:03

Kenneth mashaba is actually the besj thing ever 2 happen 2 sa tv.he can play both dramatic and comedic roles with such an extraordinary talent.he was actually generations and his perfomance in surbaban bliss was superbly wonderful.he had a small role in mr bones but he took the limelight.he has won a safta and he actually can sing.he is one hell of a guy you'd love to hate.remember his statement on generations 'if satan was a woman i swear that little sechacha(dineo)..g..'what more can you ask for?he simply is the best and should have been in the top 4 alongside barker haines and malume themba from muvhango and the ever popular oom oubaas van zyl from 7delaan.

Ilove this list except Menzi Ngubane and Ronnie Nyakale there always play one type of a character if I have to put Menzi on the list I have to see him play a Dr or something else other than the roles he plays

Boodah
25 Nov 2011 11:06

Terrence Bridget, Mothusi Magano, Patrick Shai are also great actors worth notes (perhaps in a Top 15). What makes a good actor? Type casting seems to help make our actors seem good e.g. Ronnie Nyakale. It sure would be interesting to see some of the actors, purported as great, cast in other roles that are outside their "comfort zone".

Guava4
25 Nov 2011 12:15

This list is good love them all

Sponono me agrees with you 101% about Rapulana & Sello...overrated.

I like Jet Novuka, i just get excited when i see him on tv, for the why i dunno... but I think he plays the same thing over & over again

babye2
25 Nov 2011 13:52

Patrick Shai is a also an excellent actor

i guess is the case of knowing the right people at  the right places for Rapulana even his comments on the amstel actor search - showed that he lacked the knowing of the industry. his post should have be given to Fana....

i guess for one to be an excellent actor/actress they need to be also good threater wise,

As for Sello - he should thank Generations for the Archie role it really made him

sponono
25 Nov 2011 15:58

babye2..dont get me started on rapulana's comments  on Class act...I used to just go WTF are you talkin about....

Yeah TEbby Jet novuka is good...but it looks like in this --industry-localy- , if you are not popular or you dont know the rite people you rarely get offered juicy roles taht would showcase your talent...those go to Rapulana and Sello because they are popular...
