Not everything that was of the SAMAs was screened on TV, so I pulled a fewstrings to bring you the exclusive.
First and foremost I had to watch the awards on TV to understand what everyone was moaning about. Just to clarify, the sound in the superbowl was the best ever, no kidding. The gremlins must have messed up the tv sound, because it sounded terrible on TV. I just had to watch Toya Boo-delazy's performance to some that up. Shuuu ... I'm still traumatized.
We were forced to be seated in the superbowl at 19:30 so that at 20:00 Sakumzi and Boity could randomly play hosts of the SAMAs. They announced the winner for the Best Traditional Faith Music Album Award.
Imagine that Jazz music is such a major music genre in SA, then they decided to announce the winner for Jazz Album during ads or whatever was playing on SABC1 at that time. *Claps once*Another relevant category such as Best Collaboration was treated like it was a burden so they chucked it out of the actual awards. Nc nc nc ...I'll never forgive the SAMAs for excluding the Best Rap Album announcement during the actual ceremony. I'm glad Khuli Chana didn't go up on stage to accept this award. Hip Hop is one of the biggest music genres in SA, so this move was a BIG insult ...Back to the yellow carpet where flesh was trending. This lady sure got the photographers attention. She gets full marks for that.Well ... Kelly Khumalo wasn't about to let some lady steal her shine, she's the queen of flashing then again. Even when she was on virgin islands ...Sinazo also thought her twins would steal the show ...Well ... Madam was on her A game and stole the twin shine. It was already trending ... so Boity simply hopped onto the flesh parade.Should we still call Camagwini - SA's Lady Gaga since she's toned down her look? She's really pretty though ...Maybe Generation's Senzo should have walked the yellow carpet and done the presenting, since Thami Mngqolo seemed... What's the word again... "Ripsi".
Here's another "ripsi" candidate or is Chianosky a happy and random soul? #IDKEish, then there was the Zozo & Sangere Superbeat dancer who wet himself... How did this even happen? Haai, I feel sorry for him, shem.
If love has no colour or age, then I guess for Lindelani Mkhize, love has no height ...What was Vetkuk thinking tucking his pants in the boots? At least Mahoota looks descent. The sad part about all of this is that these outfits probably cost an arm and 3 legs.
All I gotta say about Chomee is "OH HELL NO!" This look is an epic fail. No, no, no!I digg Yeahbo.net's Khetha Mkhize's outfit. The most interesting part was his head gear (waslap) - #creativity. He says it's traditional Zulu gear called Inkansula, worn my unmarried men. .
The Mi Casa guys did not stress themselves with formal shoes. There's something about suits and Allstar sneakers that seems so right. After all was said and done, the presenters bagged themselves R18 000 worth of goodies.
I'll give props to the SAMAs for the effort they put into the performances.
In closing this is my wishlist for SAMA20:
- We need more innovative stuff. Don't be shy, throw in peeps that will swing from the ceiling or something out of the box. At some point it felt like we were watching the 2012 or 1998 SAMAs.
- Choose your performers tactfully. I swear there was a point, during the show, when we visited slumberland. If you're not getting it right use Dr Malinga to perform during the show and also close the SAMA. He would have saved the show.
- We need new faces to present the awards - there's plenty of talent out there. I still don't understand what Generations and Muvhango have to do with SA music
- Don't have a green room or similar if it serves no purpose - from the presenters to the questions. If it will not be worthwhile scrap the entire thing.
- You had an awards ceremony on Friday so what was the deal with the pre-Saturday night awards announcement?
- Never belittle major music genres like Hip Hop and Jazz.
- Let's try to have fewer technical glitches, poor Kurt Darren and Glewis Lewis were victims of this. Oh, btw - please ensure the TV sound quality matches the sound in the venue.
- Please ensure that nominees are a true reflection of the actual music scene. It's absurd for people to have never heard of the musicians or music in a major category such as Female Artist Of The Year.
- Lastly, it only makes PR sense to treat Media appropriately. They are also your biggest clients and can make or break your product.
*PS: A BIG thank you to Nkululeko and Tashi for helping me with the articles. Much appreciated...
