Derailing Charlie's angel: Isidingo corrective rape

This week I found myself not missing any single episode of Isidingo and the ganging up on Cherel de Villiers-Haines-Kumar-Cooper-Holmes-le Roux had nothing to do with it. It all has to do with Roodney’s corrective rape of former police officer’s daughter Charlie Holmes.

Isidingo Calvin and Charlie

The sudden sexual orientation change that didn’t result in any sexual identity crisis or rather confusion is not the thesis for this article. I shall shelf that topic for some other time.

Charlie just got raped by Roodney, who is a “friend” of hers and her girlfriend Suzie. When Roodney arrived at Horizon Deep, he was fascinated by bad girl Charlie and we almost thought he was in love with her. Well, some of us did, until his true colours emerged. When he discovered that Charlie and Suzie are gay and in fact lovers, he pretended to empathise with their sexual orientation and “never judged” them. However, his bigotry ways are not verbal. He in fact uses his dickhead to express disapproval of homosexuality.

Charlie angel

In a country where corrective rape of homosexuals and homophobic murders are a part of daily news in major newspapers and online news agencies, it was about time one of the soapies confronted this issue which is deeply rooted in society. As we have seen and read in the news in the past couples of years, especially this year, homophobia is taking its toll and those who are gay and living in traditional communities, they find themselves endangered simple because of what they do in the bedroom. As we have seen in the news, homophobia knows no race and some European pope or whatever his religious role is, just expressed his disapproval of homosexuality. Such acts could be believed to fuel homophobic assaults, murders and corrective rapes.

Roodney

Going back to Isidingo, Charlie has just had a flashback on the night of her partying where her drink was spiked by Roodney and in the flashback, she saw his face. Meanwhile, Calvin is locked up in jail for Charlie’s rape. As the situation stands, there is mounting evidence against Calvin which points him out as the prime suspect. Yes, Roodney has done a perfect job framing him. While Calvin is paying up for a crime he didn’t commit, a rapist is roaming free on the streets of Horizon Deep.

Roodney is enjoying his freedom so much so that he has even identified his next prey and the prey is none other than Suzie. In a real drama filled episode on Thursday 7 June, Roodney almost date-raped Suzie in one of his so called corrective rape plots. After a night out in the small town of Horizon Deep, Roodney ensured Suzie was drunk. After the drinking spree, the “friends” headed to Roodney’s hotel room at The Duncan where the bustard spiked Suzie’s drink so he could “make her straight by raping her”. However, Charlie’s frantic concern put an end to Roodney’s intentions, for now that is, I think.

Charlie and Suzie

It is very likely that Roodney spiking his victims’ drinks will be one major piece of the evidence that can set Calvin free. However, that can only be done if the drug he uses is conclusively found to be the one that was used to drug Charlie.

Frank Xavier

While Charlie is busy trying to go back to her normal daily life before she got raped, friendships are at the verge of collapse as Calvin, is the son of investigative journalist Frank Xavier who is friends with former police officer Eddie Holmes. Throw in the mix Frank’s ex-girlfriend who is the chief investigating officer on this case, things are getting messy.

Eddie Holmes

Though Frank and Eddie have all the necessary resources to start investigating the scourge on their own, they are not doing so. We can safely assume it is because they cannot be taken as partial as they both seek justice for their children’s victimisation.

Priya

But detective Priyanka Kumar is set to start investing Roodney. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the bustard gets locked up and poor Calvin be freed.

If history is anything to go by, Isidingo is about to do it again as we all know they have a tendency of pre-drama, the drama and post drama.

However, after I tweeted about my intention to write this story this morning, @officialtvsa retweeted my tweet and it emerged that there are those who feel the storyline isn’t told well as seen in the imaged below.

Back to what my opinions: Very true to corrective rape or any rape for that matter, is the fact that indeed rapists are people who know their victims and are very close with them. Charlie and Suzie believe Roodney is one of the caring guys ever and very understanding of their sexual orientation.

Calvin of Isi

This storyline is bringing the best out of the actors involved in this storyline. Charlie is doing a good job as the raped gay girl and Roodney is so good as an actor that one cannot ask to be forgiven for believing he is indeed a real-life rapist. His cunning smile says everything. I am of the opinion that Charlie and Roodney are giving this very important storyline their all and that their performance is award-winning material. But you all should not count on the Saftas rewarding their performance because as we all know, there awards are allegedly corrupt and much floored!

Big ups to Isidingo for another preachy yet spell-binding storylines. I am looking forward to more of this storyline.

Hi Makisto Big Up to Isidingo actors they are all good at performing.
Charlie was first going to call her dad the minute sh finds out about the true identity of Rodney. Rodney clever as he is in framing people I dont think he was going to rape Suzie cause it was going to be obviuos. Calvin was suppose to get bail it is his first offense.

The jacket in the last pic would be a killer if it was made of lamb or pigskin.

I will not engage any debate on corrective rape though, too many things wrong with the concept & sentiment that surrounds it.

The story was well done, they handled the saga in a more quite and good way. We are  tired of seeing ppl gettn raped and all... at least the story highlited the rape that happens to Homo ppl, so all the others hu say it was boring they must sit down as this is nt for the rape that happens to every1 bt more focused on the Homo Rape as such...

Number One : If this guy is not Rodney who is this guy and it is not long whereby Rodney Charlie and Suzie were in school together and are you telling me hore they did not notice him?
Number Two : The minute you find out about this scary fake Rodney you will call the person that you feel save around your DAD you wont even BBM him.
Number Three : Scared as she was she had the verve to do to Rodney room alone.
Number Four : Rodney was never going to do it alone with Suzie he was maybe going to invite more people, Prada, and maybe even Charli.
Number Five : Although she was warned not to say anything about her flashbacks but she said it and she is alone with the alleged rapist.
Number Six : A former policeman is doing nothing to investigate the rape and leaving everything in Priya's capable hands

RODNEY! This corrective rape is confusing me because before Rodney arrived at the Deep he had no idea that Charlie was gay. I believed that it was Rodney's plan to rape Charlie all along. Gay or not. I just don't get how its suddenly a gay rape thing. Maybe I was being tjajarag but I thought the reason why both Charlie and Suzie don't remember Rodney at primary school is because they never went to school with him in the first place. He's only just a Facepage rapist. In fact, I thought the storyline was about the dangers of befriending strangers on social networks. I wonder if the corrective rape story isn't just Rodney's way of making those who know Calvin believe that he had motive to rape Charlie. Calvin has never shown any signs of being a violent person so him suddenly raping his best friend wouldn't make any sense.

I love this story line. And Rodney really acts out the creepy/psycho role well. Every time he opens his mouth, makes those facial movements and smiles, I cringe. He is very good, LOL

I honestly don't get how people can say the story line is offensive! I think its merely because when huge things happen in SA people wanna keep quiet and sweep it under the carpet! No people no! Do with hate crimes exactly what was done with the "the spear" saga (total waste of time). If people can fight for injustice as much as they do for a load of kak I can only imagine the change there would be in SA! As for Isidingo's story line... I've always been a major fan of the soapy before it was moved to the 7.30pm timeslot cause I will never give up Scandal for Isidingo! I'm not saying its better than Isidingo its just my favorite soapie. Isidingo has always been good when it comes to story lines so I completely disagree with the whole rape saga being offensive since I keep myself updated on Isidingo by reading and watching episodes Tuesdays and Friday mornings and Friday evenings. I like the story it first I thought this serial rape thing was overdone by Rhythm City but then I noticed this guy only rapes gay woman and I've followed stories about this on the news and 3rd degree and was totally against it so major big up to one of my loved soapies for the great job they are doing tackling this issue and putting it on the national agenda. And the actors are doing a great job

@ Minah, first offence doesn't entitle you to bail. The circumstances around your case and the case itself determines whether you get bail or not. As for Charlie bbm-ing and not calling, that is reaction and cannot be factualized. @ Aphrodisiac, to some extent I agree with you. The story is focused both on the dangers of trusting people at face value especially on social networks and corrective rape. Rodney was going to rape suzie and make a run for it. He would disappear into thin air and would never be found since He is not Rodney to begin with. Isidingo is a soapie whose writers try by all means to be unpredictable. So Eddie using his experience to investigate would be very predictable. But as a writer myself, I would justify Eddie's actions : he is too emotionally involved and his findings would be blame and revenge seeking and not fact seeking. Rodney is a social network rapist, his intention in the first place was to rape Charlie hence faking his identity and gaining her trust on Facepage before meeting her in person. Charlie being gay was the cherrie on top for his homophobic disgusting self. This is a story well told. Well written and superbly acted.
