As the fight for public votes wages on ahead of the COTCSA finale, Zakes says his team is the best and their choreography better than other teams.
In last night’s episode of Clash of the Choirs South Africa Team Zakes Bantwini did exceptionally well like the other teams in the top 3. However, things turned a bit ugly when the show’s presenter Bonang Matheba asked Zakes after performing his final song for the night what he would like to say to the viewers at home. “For us singing alone was not going to be good enough. We also focused on choreography and that makes us better than the other two teams.” Bonang just said: “Okay” looking a bit shocked! Talk about blowing your own horn.
Like really? Team Zakes better than the other two teams? Better than the napping Team Zwai who was in the top 5 perhaps and not the Team Zwai that is in the top 3. This raises questions about what Team Zakes will do to win the coveted title. If you think being better than other teams was the only choral mudslinging by Team Zakes, think again. During the show, Zakes also said: “Before everything goes into other provinces, it has to start in Gauteng first” and gave examples of other showbiz shizniz.
On the other hand, Team Khaya Mthethwa was on their best behaviour and the same stage humbleness that won Khaya the coveted Idols title (apart from his talent of course) prevailed on stage when Bonang asked him what he would like to say to viewers. Khaya was modest and expressed how grateful he was to be on the top three.
Though Team Zwai Bala was an underdog throughout the show and snapped out of their little nap during the top four showdown after judges refused to send one team packing after in a previous episode where he and Team Judith Sephuma classed off. Team Zwai has since upped their ante, gave Team Zakes and Team Khaya a run for their money with judges last week commenting that should they have had to send one team packing, Khaya and his team would be sent home KwaZulu-Natal. Team Zwai only started showing its claws and proved their mettle when they edged out Team Judith to book their space in the top 3. They showed us the sun rises from the east in Mpumalanga indeed.
Though I was initially of the opinion that the judges should have thrown Team Judith in the top 3, when music and talent scout maestro Lindelani Mkhize said his reason for choosing to put Team Zwai in the top three was to make it difficult for the other teams to win, it made so much sense. Though I was sad that my homies had to go back to Limpopo, I had to let the professional in me be the voice of reason.
The top 3 is very noticeably without female choir masters. Having had Judith and Winnie as some of the choir masters, one would swear indeed choirs are a female thing. But no, even music is still ruled by them males. I mean, look at founders of Joyous Celebration, Soweto Gospel Choir, Spirit of Praise and other choirs. They are so male dominated. Why are females not giving it their all like that? Honestly, I hated it when Judith and Winnie would find themselves in the clash offs.
To be quite honest, having religiously followed the show from the very beginning, I can confess that I am a Team Zakes fan. That doesn’t mean I shouldn’t blog about his choral mudslinging. After all, I am a professional. However, should Limpopo have made it to the finals, my vote was gonna be an obvious one. Be that as it may, it doesn’t mean Zakes and choir will get my vote just like that. Despite me being a Team Zakes fan, I am incredibly impressed by Team Zwai’s rise to the top and how they pulled their socks from the dims of obscurity to give tough competition to Team Zakes and Team Khaya. Khaya on the other hand has been impressively consistent with delivering exceptional performances. How do you ignore such a youngster in the music industry who only made waves after his Idols fame less than a year ago?
Choosing who to vote for is not easy! The gloves are off! It’s war. Who will win the R500 000 00 that’s on the stakes. Should it be underdog Team Zwai, dirty game player Team Zakes or Anele Mdoda’s Team “King” Khaya? The judges have done their part to select the top 3 and now it’s in our hands to vote for the winner.
