Oscar Pistorius

On February 14th , we awoke to news that Oscar had shot his girlfriend by accident. Immediately ,like many I started thinking how bad things are in the country, that good old Oscar would mistake his girlfriend for a burglar. I guess that’s what mainstream media would have liked us to believe for they sold that story well. News24 disabled its comments, most papers were reporting that Oscar Pistorius girlfriend has been killed but not implicating Oscar in the killing. Nike was like they stand by their man. This a week after the brutal rape and murder of a young lady in the Western Cape , after black Friday.

At the bail hearing there was no POWA or ANCWL decrying violence against women but what we saw is tales of how much Oscar is sobbing and rude jokes on twitter. Yet the outrage that was meted at Jub Jub was extremely muted when it came to Oscar. Was it because he was a double amputee? A gold medalist? The golden boy of SA? Who was an example of what a great South African is? A man who perpetuated the great myth of sports unifying South African across the colour bar.

For surely crime is committed by the darker skin; the Jub Jub of the worlds not the sweet charming blue eyed heroes? Are not abusers are those who leave in squalor and not in protected golf estate? As details of 4 bullet wounds, CCTV cameras, bloody bats and past ‘domestic incidence’ came out .Past held notions of the great Oscar are starting to to fade .Yet when his family made outlandish claim about the rationale of the murder, how come there was no backlash to the statement. Is our country so violent that it is easy to pass the blame on the country done the individual who pulled the trigger?

Most media was quiet,no words against patriarchy , no words against violence towards women. No hey this man through his action has snuffed out a life, aren’t all lives precious? I wonder when the court trial starts and more of the details of what happened on the fatefull night of February 13 ,what will the papers say? How long will Nike continue being in the man’s corner? What will our public do to send a message to every boy ,girl, child and man that it does not matter if you a re a young kasi boy or rich and handsome Olympian ,South Africa does not tolerate nor support any form of violence especially towards women
