On Carte Blanche: Marikana

Coming up on Carte Blanche this Sunday (26 August, 2012):

Marikana

As South Africa assesses the implications of the Lonmin killings and various inquiries get underway, the only good that can come out of it, say many, is that Government may perhaps begin to confront the realities of poverty. But if only it were that simple - there are complicated power struggles underway as well, with unions and politicians accused of furthering their own agendas. Carte Blanche looks back - and forward.

Producer: Joy Summers
Presenter: Bongani Bingwa
Journalist: Amalia Christoforou

Black Gold and Hot Rocks

It may sound like the plot of a James Bond movie: diamond deals in Angola, oil wells in Texas and millions changing hands. But for investors who bought into these deals, promises of great riches turned into nothing more than threats. Carte Blanche followed this case from London to Las Vegas until we finally tracked down the alleged mastermind right here in Gauteng.

Producer: Graham Coetzer
Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender
Journalist: Susan Comrie

Carte Blanche is on M-Net on Sundays at 19h00.

This was an incident that will live on within the hearts and minds of many. Although I'm celebrating the workers major breakthrough I can't help but think of those who lost their lives through pangas and bullets. My body still cringes when I think of these recent incidents of man slaughter.

In South we have a very diverse society:

1. The Rich - The likes of Patrice Motsepe Who is worth R27 billion after a decrease of 13% from last year according to Forbes Magazine. You can imagine what a 13% decrease can do to your salary right now.

2. The Borrowed Riches - The Tenderpreneurs who are on a thin line between rich and poverty. Should tenders dry out, they'll be back on a job market or down to poverty.

3. The ones who can afford - These type of people live from pay cheque to pay cheque and should they miss one or a couple of this monthly income it's down to basics of poverty. And with the SANRAL on the way I fear the worst.

4. The poor - These people have got nothing to lose except their pride.

While growing up (I'm still growing and learning of course even in my senior years) I learned that YOU DO NOT PICK A FIGHT WITH SOMEONE WHO HAS GOT NOTHING TO LOSE! That remained true with the people of Marikana. This is a poverty stricken community and all they are left with is their lives, and their pride told them to lose lives if needs be.

South Africa {TIME BOMB} Tick....Tick.....Tick......
