The South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC), public service radio station, Radio 2000, is proud to announce the recording of the Madiba Project, which saw South African music legends and ordinary citizens coming together to compose and record two original birthday songs and two music videos which accompany the songs, for Tata Nelson Mandela’s 94th birthday this Wednesday, 18 July.

The songs were launched on Monday 25 June, on Radio 2000’s breakfast show ‘Morning Joy’ presented by Justice ‘Just Ice’ Ramohlolo and Nthateng Lerata.

The songs are titled ‘All About Love’ and ‘Happy Birthday Madiba’. The songs were composed by JB Arthur, Pops Mohammed, Tebogo Rameetse and Lebohang Sebele.

The public can SMS one of the below keywords to 31755 to download the song at the retail price of R20 per download:

- Love
- Madiba

Through a distribution deal with Universal Music SA Records and EXactmobile, all proceeds of the CD/DVD will be donated to the building of a state of the art Nelson Mandela’s Children’s Hospital.

The project is one of the ways the public service broadcaster will be celebrating Mandela’s 94th birthday.

Radio 2000 took the initiative to record these songs as the SABC’s way of showing appreciation to a man, who is loved the world over, for his enormous contribution to humanity.

The songs will also be played on all of the SABC’s 18 radio stations and the videos will be screened on SABC 1, 2 and 3 in July 2012.

Ms. Lulama Mokhobo SABC GCEO said: “The project is nation building exercise which began with Team Radio 2000 and has since grown into a national project involving some of the best South African Musicians and SABC Staff (first citizens) getting together to compose two original songs for Madiba.

"This is our little humble birthday gift called “2000 voices wishing Madiba a 94th Happy Birthday, from all at Radio 2000, our listeners, the SABC and South African Musicians”.

Ms. Sibongile Mkhabela, CEO of Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital Trust said: “As the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust, we are humbled at being chosen by Radio2000 to be the sole beneficiary of such an initiative.

"The proceeds of this song will go towards building a dedicated specialist hospital for the children of Southern Africa, which has been Madiba’s dream for years. This is a wonderful initiative by Radio2000, and what better contribution to the legacy of Madiba than to bring together the South African community through song”.

Randall Abrahams, MD for Universal Music South Africa said: “We are excited to be part of such a great initiative. Universal Music South Africa would like to wish Tata Madiba a blessed and glorious 94th birthday. We acknowledge and appreciate your life’s work which has benefitted the people of your country and humanity at large. We will continue to sing and dance in your honour. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MADIBA!!!”.
