Lungi Story

The Top 5 experienced a treat in Tuesday night's MasterChef: world-renowned chef, Michel Roux Jr swooped in for a MasterClass and to act as a guest judge. The contestants literally jumped with glee. Who wouldn’t?

Michel took over his family's restaurant in London, Le Gavroche, back in the early 90's. On the show, he made the restaurant’s signature dish: stuffed artichokes with chicken livers, chicken mousse and truffles in a Madeira sauce.

The challenge was that the contestants needed to recreate the dish - luckily for them, they took detailed notes. In addition, they had to make an accompaniment to it: Chicken Ballotine. Sarel summed it up most eloquently: “It’s an Invention Test on top of a recipe! It’s huge!”

As if there is not enough pressure, Michel said: “I am looking for perfection. I want to see a ballotine that works beautifully with the wonderful flavours of the truffles in the artichokes.”

The bearer of the Top Dish honour would also get an advantage for the next challenge in the form of a bell. This bell grants the winner the opportunity to ring it once in the next challenge and to call on any of the judges for advice on their dish.

After everyone completed their dishes, Michel said: “You cooked from the heart and it has been an unbelievable day for me. A day that will stay with me in my memory forever.” Deena was awarded the coveted bell and Michel advised him to use it wisely.

It was with a heavy heart that Lungi had to leave the MasterChef kitchen. She said: “I can leave this competition and be recognized as a cook, not just the young contestant who constantly has to prove herself. I am leaving as a mature young woman. It really has been an amazing road of self-discovery.”

My heart really went out to Lungi as she wept her goodbyes - things are getting very intense now - everyone's put so much into it that to leave now must be crushing.

I still can't believe what these people are prepared to do to make a dish - the details, the complications, the huge number of hours.

I'm also stumped that they all knew who Michel Roux was - not only that but their response to him and how finished they were. I didn't have a clue who he was and yet they knew who he was without the judges even saying his name.

I know he does that show Service on BBC Lifestyle but only know it because the judges mentioned it. I didn't know people existed who would know him so well and be so moved by meeting him - I've never watched an international MasterChef before so it's mindboggling to me.

I have obviously enjoyed this series more than I thought. Was in tears with Lungi when she left.

My mind was blown that they got Michel Roux Jnr. Couldn't believe it when I saw it advertised last week. He is one of my 3 favourite chefs (the others being Heston Blumenthal and Marco Pierre White, the guy that made Gordon Ramsey cry). I was in awe watching Michel Roux cook. Incredible.

Shame Lungi man. @Tashi I dont even know the SA judges names, I know them by the nicknames we gave them (big brother tendencies): Blackguy (I think its Bernie, the one who LOVES Lungi), Chubby Cheeks (he is never happy with anyone, the bold one) and Ian Von Mermety 's brother (LOL he is hillarious without doing anything, is he Ian Vn Mermerty's brother?, they have the same aura). And Please Tashi, can you profile the judges, I wanna know what they do, do they own restaurants? I saw the Blackguy's pics on some resturant in monte casino.

Of the contestants left, I think I'd feel safe eating in Deena's resturant. He is good, humble, doesn't approach meals with cockiness except for curry ofcourse and he's never dissapointed there.
