Coming up on 3rd Degree:

Episode title: It's just hair isn't it?

Broadcast date: Tuesday, 26 June 2012

Teaser ....

For black women the hair debate is a heated one. Bring it up in any salon and it will cause an uproar, do you prefer the natural look or does the ‘fake’ weave do it for you?

The politics of personal identity are deeply intertwined in black female hair debate. It is the site of great contestation but as Cosmopolitan editor Sbu Mpungose says in this debate you can't win “when you choose the weave you are labelled a sell out and when you go natural you come across as ungroomed”.

If the debate of personal identity is not enough to contest with, there is also the opinion of men like Huge Masakela who is reported to have said that he would not take a picture with a women in a weave as he feels it is un-African.

This week 3rd Degree talks to influential black women on both sides of the debate from outspoken TV presenter and poet Lebo Mashile to the self proclaimed weave queen Bonang Matheba. We also get eNews senior journalist Nikiwe Bikitsha to weigh in on the debate.

3rd Degree is on e.tv and the eNews channel on Tuesdays at 21h30.

E tv protrays them as having no fear no favours. But for more than three years i try to concentise them of the corruption and unfairness in the Drakenstein Municipality in Paarl in the Western cape but they are not interested in covering that story. E have mailed information and so forth but to no avail .I wonder why ?

Good grief!! this weave vs natural issue has been done to death. Chris Rock even did a whole 2 hour doccie on it. This shouldn't even be an issue, my hair my choice, finish 'n klaar.
White people also put on weave / hairpieces to add volume to their hair or whatever, but that's never a debate, it's "acceptable". 3rd degree is loosing its touch now, it lacks the originality and spark it used to have.

Deborah or is it Debra lost her spark when she was fired from e-News, that really dainted her image and broke her heart.  It is evident that she has not as yet recovered from it.

I am a natural person, have done weaves but I was not comfortable.  I have since gone back to my natural self.  It is indeed a question of what makes you feel comfortable and feeling great.  Being natural does nor make one more black just as having weaves not making one less black.  This topic has reached its sell by date.

Debra should really hire new researches for her show, she is a seasonal journalist and all this does not suit her at all.
