The nominees for the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards were announced in Los Angeles today (14 July 2011), after a year of anticipation and speculation.

The annually increasing buzz surrounding the awards suggests that TV has officially taken over from cinema as the place to be. The days of cinema being regarded as more important are over.

Premiere shows are proving to be more original and exciting than new movies, the special effects are on a par and performances are often far more sophisticated than the performances of many movie actors who dial it in for a huge pay check.

The announcement of the Primetime nominees follows hot on the heels of the Daytime Emmys in mid-June.

For those who've been enquiring about the difference between the two ceremonies: the Daytime Emmys cover shows on Daytime TV in the US; and the Primetime Emmys are for the evening shows.

It can be confusing because many of the daytime series air in the evening in South Africa. Talk shows and soapies such as Oprah, Ellen and Bold and the Beautiful all air during the day in the US.

The two ceremonies used to be one when the awards were first introduced in the late 1940's. They spilt into two in the early seventies, with the Daytime ceremony predecing the Primetime one annually.

Glee's Jane Lynch hosts the awards this year, following her win last year for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her role as Sue Sylvester. She's been nominated in the same category again this year.

Without further adieu, the nominees in the main categories are:
