I have a confession. I hated the book this movie is based on. I really tried to read it and just understand Liz’s journey but after a year and 2 months I have yet to finish it. I am still stuck in India and the only reason I made it thru Italy was because of Lavhee who kept egging me on to finish the damn book and review it on my bookworms blog.
So, when I heard there was a screenplay in Hollywood that is being circulated for the lead role; I quit the book and thought “Thank Gaad for movies. Now I can pack the damn book away and file it under READ/DONE”. Now, the movie is here and here are my thoughts…
Julia Roberts retraces Liz Gilbert’ steps in this whirlwind movie as she finds herself unhappy in a marriage and a horrible divorce, while trying to discover and find herself she feels her life fall apart when an affair goes wrong. It is a very emotionally taxing experience when you see what Liz went thru to find the happiness and joy she has now.
Liz decides to go find the girl she gave up when she started living her life according to everyone’s expectation. She vows to achieve her dreams by literally going to the different parts of the world – she decides to go to Italy because the language fascinates her but also to eat as much Italian food as possible; then go to India to find her spiritual self since she did not feel she had a connection to God and also go to Bali to fulfill a prophecy that a Ketut had previously told her during an interview – to teach him English.
What you get from the movie is the message that “It is never too late. It is never too late to discover yourself, to dream and achieve your dreams. It is never too late to JUST live. Just stop putting limitations on your lives and your capabilities. Live and enjoy the only life you may ever know.”
The elements or moments in the book that I thoroughly enjoyed were nowhere in the movie – but I have to admit AGAIN that I am far from finishing the book. The movie is enjoyable and is a girly night out movie. The casting is perfect – espech Ketut (Hadi Subiyanto), the hottie in Italy - Giulio(Andrea Di Stefano) and Richard from Texas(Richard Jenkins).
I loved the movie – may actually finish reading the book. It gets 3.5 Segs stars. It is defs for everyone that feels like they are living someone else’s life and want the challenge to find themselves.
The movie starts showing at Ster-Kinekor theaters on the 7th October 2010.
