“
Girls got balls... They’re just a little higher up, that’s all....”
Joan Jett They get booed off stages, they get ridiculed and told “Girls do not play electric guitars” by mentors or tutors. They are determined to be rock stars. Joan Jett(Kirstin Steward) and Cherrie Currie(Dakota Fanning) get their fair share of cruelty from audiences as they try to make it as rock stars.
This based on a true story movie about when the 2 teenage Los Angeles girls (obsessed with punk) meet a rock band producer Kim Fowley(Michael Shannon) whom is also determined to make history with the first all chick-rock band. The Beatles are hot and he needs a girl band to make his mark.
He needs them to have a different sound that will capture an audience. The relationship between the girls and their journey is amazing to watch. It gives you an insight into women’s journey to be taken seriously in the music industry. Michael Shannon is hilarious to watch – he was the highlight of the movie for me. Completely stole the limelight!!
As the production notes says “The Runaways to the big screen in this story of a group of extraordinary young women as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary band that paved the way for future generations of girl musicians.”
I loved the movie because the message is clearly to give hope and courage to those who have been told over and over that they are inadequate, will never make it and “girls can’t”. A beautiful story that gets a 4 out of 5 from me
The movie starts showing at Nu-Metro theaters on the 9 July 2010.
