Based on a memoir by a top flight UK sports journalist and writer, Joe Warr (Clive Owen), at the joys and pains of having to fumble through fatherhood during the most difficult time of his life.
Joe moved to Australia for love – after he fell in love with an Australian equestrian, his beautiful wife Katy(Laura Fraser). They have a young carefree son Artie(Nicolas McAnulty) – who is adored by his mother while the father travels the world following major sports events.
A tragedy strikes that leaves Joe in pain and now in desperate need to connect with his
sons – yep, he had previously been married and has another son, a teenaged Harry(George MacKay), whom he has not seen in years. He has to try to fix the relationship and be the kind of father that both his sons need.
Will he crumple at the pressure? Will he know what to do with the boys? With the disapproving and judgmental in-laws approve and support his decisions and child-rearing methods? Will anyone understand his way of raising his children?
This movie is a definite must-see. It is filled with humour, pain and surprises. As the production notes stated “
THE BOYS ARE BACK charts Joe’s moving and humorous journey from part time dad to full-on fatherhood; teaching him how to deal with his own grief and, for the first time, tune in to the needs of his sons Artie and Harry.”
I loved every minute of it and as the tears flowed freely – with moments of pain and joy, This movie gets a fabulous 4.5 out of 5 from me…
The movie starts showing at Ster-Kinekor theaters on the 9 July 2010.
