SABC sucks. The fiasco around the broadcasting of AFCON 2010 taking place in Angola just cements it. If you have been following the story thus far,you would know that SABC are locked in negotiations with the license holder for the rights to broadcast the primier African soccer tournament that starts on sunday.
The big issue according to the mailandguardianonline seems to be the price tag that goes with the rights that SABC is unwilling to pay.Now Supersport apperently have bought the rights to broadcast the games everywhere except South Africa on the continent. So what this mean ,we may miss the tournament if the SABC does not resolve their issues or if Supersport does not pull a miracle and secure the rights to broadcast the games locally too.
If any of us were looking for some reassurance from the SABC,we are not getting any. There has been no promos thus far promoting the tournament or the televised games. We have no gurantee from the SABC that it will broadcast all the games at all or is it going to be the notorious "delayed live broadcast" for certain games. They have just been quiet. No official word thus far in the press or it's own stations.
In a nutshell this whole fiasco is a new low for the SABC.It smacks of mismanagement and incompetence. For the SABC shouldhave secured the rights a long timeago.Soccer is the biggest sport in Mzansi, with or without Bafana Bafana.
How far is the incompetence ,we will only be able to see come Sunday night when the tournament kick-offs.Will it be broadcasted, if yes, will this be done so for the entire tournament? You'd think ,the SABC would try to use AFCON as an appetiser for the world cup,but the guys at the Ivory towers known as TV Park and Radio Park seem to have no clue of what the clients want or need.
So if anyone out there knows where to catch AFCON, for us poor Mzansi folks, come sunday night and beyond, please do tell us.
