Love in a time of blackouts is a short film set around load shedding, drug experimentation and a love triangle of sorts. It's a comedy cum drama , about life without power and the crazy things people do when the lights are off.literaly. If you've seen

The basic plot is that Thato ( Matome Senyolo) is one of those good kids whose loosing his way in Jo'burg.Tired of being a conservative ,his trying to experiment more , to live a little, to live his farm boy image for town boy-im-conscious-and-with-it look. He has an outgoing girlfriend Zandile aka Zaza ( Tshenolo Mabale) ;whose seen it all ,and has many t-shirts to prove it. A total opposite to Thato. A darring and likeable roommate Tirisano (Zolz) who enjoys his fun, women,soccer and beer. Not necessarily in that order.
Our story is set when the trio have to spend an entire Saturday at home without power and being students, without money. What do you do when the idiot box is not there to keep you company? Their choices take the couple on a not so rollercoaster ride of self discovery and test of their relationship and love.
I came up with the story in early 2008,after I had seen one of my friends going out on his own without money ,a budget or funding and producing an excellent short film called the
Delivery and Pule's
Tumelo.I was wow, one is always waiting for the right moment; waitig for the planets to align themselves or that big time producer to say "hey heres the big cash go spend it on your dream project".But life does not work that way.Next thing it's four years since you left tertiary ,aside for the work you've done for other people you have nothing to show that is truely yours. So last year I went out with no money but what I was earning,the support of my beloved , a bunch of TV students from NEMISA and an amateur acting troupe and saw myself on setwith a finished script producing and directing my first short fim post varsity.
The experience was great,and after some serious hustling ,the project was able to move from post production to be burned onto DVD. I sent it to one or two or so festivals and the guys at "Off the shelf" hosted by coal stove . Who do screenings of short films every last sunday of each month, have shortlised the film.The screening start from 18h30 pm until 10 : 00 pm and it includes a Q&A session and two other short films.
