In South Africa, an extraordinary number of ex-prisoners commit crimes within months of leaving jail, only to land up behind bars again. All too often the re-offenders graduate from lesser crimes to more serious ones.
Tonight 3rd Degree explores the lives of young repeat offenders from Alexandra township and Kliptown in Johannesburg . The criminal mind is exposed as Bongani reveals how his “career” progressed from petty crime to breaking and entering , to armed robbery. One of his victims was paralysed in an attack and is now confined to a wheelchair for life.
The show asks: what drives these young men to repeatedly put their futures at risk? Is prison nothing more than a university of crime? What can be done to keep criminals out of prison and reintegrate them back into society as law abiding citizens?
