How Was R Kelly's Concert?

Written by Brown Shuga from the blog SHUGAS BLOGIWOOD on 29 Jun 2009

Too tired to blog... this is just a place for those who attended R KELLY's concerts in SA to give us feedback on their experiences.

Before we get to hear your feedback...here are a few pics R Kelly posted on his Twitter account.

Kels1

Arriving in Soweto with Winnie Madikizela Mandela. Now we see where he saw the first in the air thingy....

Kels2

Listening attentively to Mam' Winnie...at the Mandela home in Soweto.

Kels3

Looking through old Mandela family pictures ....

After Soweto, Kellz headed to Sun City to get ready for the perfomance and these were taken during rehearsals....

Kels4
Kels5

These pics I took on our way to Sun City....

kels6

It was hectic! I had already given up on seeing the man....

Kels7

Luckily for us, there were perfomances by Nato C and Malaika before him and about 15-20 minutes after I arrived at the Superbowl, R Kelly started perfoming and huwwieee...I was blown away.

Having watched a DVD of one of his concerts a few days before the Sun City gig, I sort of had an idea what he would do and his perfomance was exactly what I'd seen.

He's a gifted singer! He sounds really great and if your LIVE voice sounds like the voice on the CD then I'm cool. So ja, he was great.

People are complaining about how he didn't finish his songs but really now, if he had sang full songs, we would have complained about how he only perfomed a few songs.

My rating? 8/10!

I left immediately after the perfomance and I hear the perfomance was mad fun and those who were there, please share!
Heard R was really friendly and mingling, taking pics with people at the afterparty.... Were you there? Halla back!

I enjoyed the show shem... I dont mind him not finishing his songs coz that way we got to sing along to most of his songs... I think that was a great idea! The man has been in the music industry for more than 15yrs!

Lets not forget the tribute to Micheal Jackson, he sang "Jacksons 5 - I'll be there" and "I believe I can fly"... (my friend cried)...hehe shem, she loveeedddd MJ. Couldnt see if you and MJJ cried ;-) some guy behind us was bimbing "i believe I can fly" he was talking it.

I agree with Madala... it was supposed to be 90mins (according to computicket), but he was on stage at 10pm and done by 23h15. He could've sang 7 more songs in that last 15mins!! Attempts of us shouting "we want more" were not responded too. He just disappeared off stage and his band members ran away!!

I really have seen better. The guys perfomance was average. I liked seeing him on stage but when he was done it was not a wow feeling. The organisation of the whole thing was crap. The golden circle was too full. I couldn't get food afterwards, the places were either closed or too full. Sun City can't cater for so many people. I did not go to the afterparty as it was too cold. Saw Khanyi Mbau looking without her camera crew. Maybe they had their night off. Hoping that they would find her a table at the restaurant because she was a diva. But it was first come first serve. So she eventually left.

That was my favorite part, I got it all on video. It was just beautiful.

I thought the guy would come back nyana. Maybe feel sorry for us. The ending was not the greatest.

Guys i can't find my camera cord. I wanted to upload the video's and photos. Will try again tomorrow.

Bad Side:
Doors should've opened at 5 or 6 to avoid long ques. Tickets had to be verified by that scanning machine coz apparently there were fake tickets sold. I got a bit claustrophobic and since drinks were not allowed in, I had to go to the bathroom to drink water (as they didnt sell any drinks inside). When I came back in, the scanning machine was ditched.

Funny moment:
When R did the freestyle. He said he want a girl he can take back to America. "Do you have your passport? Did you get your shots? So you can come with me to Americaaa!!!" Then he also said its a long 20yrs now he's finally here. He could've been here long ago and blamed it on the Flying :-)

Afterparty:
Sponsored by SAB Miller so you know the drinks were free - or was it for VIP only? R Kelly was there hanging out and you could see where he was by spotting a group of girls trying to take photos of him. When he got close to the general area, gosh all hell broke loose.

His DJ played 4 tracks from his new album (after Naked DJ's set) and R went to the DJ Box and sang along to the last song. And he introduced his main man Touch! This was after Touch whispered something in R's ear... I think it might have been something like "Hey my man, introduce me as your main man Touch"..heheheh just kidding Touch! I noticed Touch had dimples..sweet.

Fistaz took over and got the crowd dancing until the some speaker died - that when we decided to leave. It was 3am but seemed like the party went on.

We saw 3 accidents on the N4 to Pretoria. Glad we all made it safe that we can still blog about Mr. R. In RnB!!

Oh wow, oh wow...***in Wilson BBBBBB Nkosi's Voice****

CAPE TOWN WAS ON FIRE LAS NITE!!!!!!!!!!!! I was blown away by the performance and it was not at all short.... 60 Plus Madala he went over the allocated 90 minutes. The man, The crowd, The sound WAS ON FIRE!!!!!!!

Okay enough now.... W erock up at the Grandwest and get our tickets checked ***that's after reading about the Sun City horror stories****
everything went smooth we were early so we decided to have a drink or two.... Lawd where on earth do they sell a Savannah for 20 bucks Crooks!!!! anyway just after 8 we go inside to get connected with our seats beautifully positioned right infront of the stage....

We go in I get a shock of my life... I had visions of empty confed cup stadiums and I saw rkelly promoters giving away tickets at some busy intersection in Cape Town.... LOL...

The place was deserted and the show was billed to start at 8?? so we chill for a few mins and some strange band goes on stage they are from Naija nd they do their thing and the sound was shocking to say the least, you couldnt hear a word of what they were saying....

15 minutes later they are done, the place is still empty.... they vacate the stage and we have some dj asking us if we are ready for Robert, we sya hell yeah we are... and she said we will resume in a bit in the meantime we were serenaded by some weird music while they were setting up the stage for Rob, now after a few drinks we had to go and empty our bladders a few times before Rob took the stage which worked out fine cause we waited for about an hour, the place was filling up lekker and all i was praying for was let the sound people do their job cause what I heard earlier with the Naija dude was shocking.

We decide to buy more drinks, and while in the static quee Rob gets on stage but after waiting an hour Savanna had to be more important, and guess who was standing behind me and started to chat, Rob's promoter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we had a lekka chat... that's all am willing to reveal.

I rush in after being served finally, and the house was on fire the Arena was packed and Rob was doing his thing on stage,

This is a part when I say oh wow Oh wow Oh wow! he gave us the best performance we all forgot about the Naija torture and waiting and just sang along to the man and he gave it to us.

I must say doing shorter versions of songs worked out very well cause he sort of covered almost everyone.

The Tribute was moving as expected all in all I was BLOWN AWAY, if asked to attend again would I? HELL YEAH!!!!

Now lets see if Anthony Hamilton will deliver

Tbo Touch!! ;-) I guess he was very happy drinking expensive champagne from the bottle :-)

<<Lavhee was the party outside or something?>> No the party was indoors at the Hall of Treasures!

<<We got all our ticket money back there at the casino. Won R1200 so I saw R Kelly for mahala>>  Eish I tried my luck with gambling for the very first time before the show. I loaded R200 on the card. There was a time when I was on 2000 credits. But lost everything. Then it hit me afterwards that I should've cashed it then, then go play again with the original money i put it.  But ke... next time. I can see why Gambling can get addictive.

I remember not knowing which machine to go to coz I dont know how to play and my friend was like "ask the veterans, on your left" and there was these women in their 50's gambling away! Haai boMama!!

It took a while for Kellz to come here and the next thing u do this lousy events sis man... I will never fogive u,I will never attand the events that u organise. You u better call him again before end of the year. So many places that he was supposed to go to. DISAPPOINTED. xa.

We got into Sun City before Kell'z performance so we went to get some drinks outside Squires (lost my iphone there , dodgy bastards!!!)

I was close to tears when we got to entrance 6 and were told it's closed!! I was furious, how could it be full if there were loads of people there with tickets still standing outside???? After an exchange of not very nice words, they let us in..........LOL

I've been a quiet blogger for years but for this I have to comment. I attended the concert in Cape Town , it was the bomb. R Kelly did not disappoint, his performance was out of this world. Although he started a bit late, the waiting was worth it. I had to change my high heels for flat ones so that  I could enjoy him....to top it all I got a hug. He sang most of my songs and don't regret paying R568, it was worth every minute of it. After I heard what  happened in Suncity, I was a bit worried thinking the same would happen.

Cheesa I think you were the girl I was standing with, talking about Xolelwa & her "pregnant looking boyfriend" and that stuck up nigerian girl.

Foxxy
01 Jul 2009 19:29

Hey ya'll... I also went to the cape town concert and i absolutely loved it. Still on a high from the performance.... No glitches with the tickets etc. Even though we had to wait for an hour as soon as R. Kelly came on it was all forgotten....

Was in golden circle but didn't manage to get to the front front (relying on other people for transport)... So i was like 3 people from the front. When he came down to hug people i only managed to reach over and touch his arm :-(

I also saw an old man, he was quiet, looking a bit sad, during the waiting period. Wanted to ask him if he was 60 plus Madala but i thought he may just think i'm a wierdo... Also got into a fight (verbal) about "spots" in golden circle with people who went to the toilet and came back and said "you're standing on my place"

Ekse Brown Suga, I flew more than 2000 km for this show, and could not take my camera inside.  Now I am searching the whole internet full to find a place where I can view the photos that was taken at the show.  do you know of such a place on the web?

Anyway, the show was the world's greatest, just a pitty I didn't know about the VIP passes, would have paid anything to be at the after party.
