Mandla Mthembu’s problems seem to have taken such a toll on his health that he failed to appear in court for a maintenance case.
Mthembu, who is in arrears of R111,000 on his Lamborghini, was summoned by the Johannesburg family court to come and explain why he had failed to pay a R4,000 monthly maintenance to his two children and former wife, Dolly Matshabe, since February.
But the embattled celebrity tycoon, who is married to TV actress Khanyisile Mbau, sent a letter to the court claiming that he had been diagnosed with “depression”. His cellphone remained switched off.
On Friday, Sowetan reported that Absa Vehicle Finance was about to repossess one of Mthembu’s two yellow Lamborghinis after he defaulted – for the third time – on the R36,000 monthly instalment. We also revealed that Mthembu was given an ultimatum to pay by Friday or return the car.
“If he does not make the necessary payment, the car would be reported as stolen and anyone found driving it would be arrested,” a source told us at the time.
We can confirm that at the time of going to print last night, Mthembu had not made any payment and that agents from the bank’s tracing department had not yet located the car.
We can further reveal that the maintenance court yesterday gave him until tomorrow to pay the outstanding R16,000 or face arrest.
Mthembu also owes the Johannesburg Metro Police Department a whopping R78,000 in outstanding traffic fines. The JMPD confirmed that its officers were looking for him after warrants for his arrest were issued.
This, according to another source, was the reason he stayed away from court.
“He could not go to court because he knew that metro police were planning to nab him as soon as he left the court building,” the source added.
Our sister paper Sunday World reported that Mthembu and his wife were recently kicked out of a R100,000-a- month rented apartment in Sandton. This was after they repeatedly defaulted on rent.

I m really confused or maybe it is just my contentment in appreciatong everything that I have. But it worries when such things happen. Why the hell would you Rent two expensive apartment and by two of the most expensive cars on credit whilst you have been awarded such an amount of money. Surely if you had brains to sue Transnet you probably would have had brains spend the money wisely???? By the way this man was awarded over 50 million rand by transnet...
