Bye bye springbok hello protea

Finaly a miracle is about to happen, at the end of the year thespringbok will officially be taken off our rugby jersy. The Protea will sit on its own not next to the relic of apartheid South Africa. Some people are crying foul and say this is unnecessary because the bokke have a history and tradition that goes way back.I say the history and tradition is steeped in Apartheid history and iconography. I believe the protea since its our national sporting code does not deserve to compete for space with the bokke. If bafana can adopt it, cricket, netbal, athletics even school sporting federations why should there be a compromise when it comes to rugby?

When the protea is finaly adopted ,on its own ,it too will start it's own history, culture and legacy that will reflect the aspirations, dreams and values of the new Mzansi not that of racist white South Africa.
So cry me a river old bokke but good bye and good riddance.Sweet

Very sorry on this one-but Springbok rule-Not everything from our past is bad, what need to change are attitudes, not symbols.

Leave them bloody Springbok alone-especially this dumb ass looking guy called Butana-

aaargh Ta-bang-thats a bit rich-hegemony?Its a mere symbol, you cant deny our past, nor claim it never existed.Same as the Protea, its the symbol from the "white hegemony"-why cant it be retired too?

I mean, look at all the names darkies come up with-Bafana Bafana,Banyana Banyana,Amajita.....Really now?

I think it makes white hegemony look and sound better

im not denying our past javas.im saying we need to build a better future and we dont need to build it on apartheid symbols.
the protea is the national sporting emblem of the country and it has been adopted by allthecodes.only rugby has comprimised on that why?

whena tha u sound like a racist or sumone u just cant except the past ulepo is rite in saying that the names that the white 'acclaimed' sports sound a bit better than the ones that are considered to be black. and anyway they are better things to worry about than worry about removing symbols of 'oppression' that mean absolutly nothing futi all of this makes it look lyk they want to take over sports and make it an african thing only because phela they got thier partcipation quotas etc. kanti wat more do the board want?

Its because they kept on asking y wasnt the Protea changed too?Arnt they both from the same era?I mean, really now,Thabza, thats one thing that I think these moronic politicians are unnecessary meddling in.

Cant they go and play with something?Balls or javelins,hammers-anything but leave the Springboks alone...

Especially Butana-just that my honest opinions about would leave many thinking Im insensitive....

Still tha-bang its a dumb move to rename the Springboks. Somethings are better left off the way they are.

thabang hay kabi joe...what will happen in the songs like....
¶  "Hie kom die bokke" "Hie kom die bokke"¶
...they are called the "Springboks"....indeed they act like ones....what will they be called then...the "proteas"...no...no..no...just imagine when the Bafana Bafana..name has to be changed....maybe to sth like the "Tortoise" ...I beleive that will be unneccessary coz the name Bafana Bafana has a history behind.....and i dont see anything racist to the name Springbok.....But then if it has already been decided to be taken off officially then who am i ....no matter what ...they will always be the SPRINGBOKS, this animal is one of our national animals...and the Bokkes just suit the name period.

tha-bang, i'm failing to see the link btw the springbok and apartheid...i.e how the springbok was used to segregate or suppress. I'm with Lepogo on this, attitudes need to be changed, not symbols.

Oh,and ja,you all can crucify me for this I just dont give a Terror(a new verb describing an uncaring attitude le go thloka dithlong) whites at least knew what they were doing......

Look at Apartheid, from townplanning to education-blacks needed at least 50 years BEFORE it qould have been easy for us to dismantle the machinery.....

But,alas, what a waste it has been

If you guys want to continue the springboks go ahead.Javas the Protea was adopted as our national sporting emblem and the cricket team was the first to adopt.even the bafana jersey has it on it.Its only the springboks that still have the old emblemof the springbok on their jersey.
talk of songs, they will be new songs. the springbok is an emblem thats still fuelswhite hegemony and entitlement that we saw earlier this year when the lady was assulted ans asked "why are u trying to take over or sport".
the end of the springbok will be an end of an era and a start of a new one.when the money changed the was no hoopla, when the springbok was take of saa the was no outcry, when the national flag was changed there was no outcry.cause we all know the moral need for them.the springbok emblem ranks on the same plane as the flag, the money notes and the anthem, its a symbol

Heish South Africans
- i dont see anything wrong with the Springbok symbol, maybe it was Thabo Mbeki who was really for the symbol. i remember he mentioned that Bafana Bafana should change its name to something that will inspire them like the Rugby team. they are called Springbok because they can run as fast as the springbok.
there are good things that the aparthied brough even though they are very few. they tried getting blacks into the team and what did that bring? the team performance dropped.
i think these guys should concentrate on real issues like POVERTY, HEALTH, UNEMPLOYMENT , SECURITY and stop wasting the tax payers money.
Tha Bang so everything that was done during the apartheid era should go. - ROADS, BUILDINGS and them Africans? hey i can picture katakata clearing the whole of South Africa and you guys rebuilding it again. LOL
something very interesting Chartered Accountants from SA are so in demand - why because due to aparthied the country tried to equip itself with all the skills to run the country. that particular CA person when he leaves to work in USA, he is considered South African whether black or white.
why did you celebrate when the Springboks won the world cup because they represented South Africa not them Africans.
sometimes we need to let go of the past and concentrate on the future. its a long way but we will get there.

<<<they tried getting blacks into the team and what did that bring? the team performance dropped.>>> You are SO wrong for saying that sweety...it's just wrong on many levels but I have no time for such arguments...

I didn't know this decision was final but if it is, then that's really sad...there are more important things to worry about...I like the Springbok

Well Well Well. The Springbok or the Protea? Bokkie or Blommitjie? I am a Blommitjie. Yes a real live one. I earned it and i compete Internationally under this symbol. Strange thing though while out there competing i am referred to as a Springbok by other competitors from other nations, so the question from me is Why change the way the world already sees us? I am one of the proudest South African competitors on the international sporting front and proud as punch to wear the Protea for the country. I feel the Springbok is still South Africa and our Rugby team will be nothing but the Bokke. SA is not nearly as racist as some other really big nations out there. Unfortunately what i have come to see is the reverse racism coming out. This saddens me to the core. One nation it not here when i read things like "Darkies & Whitties". All i see is camouflaged attitudes. Come on people your are South Africans Pull together stop causing friction between Races an become proud of your country and teams.

i think its a stupid move....As long as the Protea is there that should settle the matter...the issue about space is also a dumb one...does that mean that all the other signs such as Adidas,Nike etc must be removed cause they're competing for space with the Protea???

There are so many things happening in our country in the name of democracy, but the only ppl who enjoys it are the one in Parliament. The public, ppl on the grounds never get included in decisions like that, all we do is to swallow it and go Vote for bloodyfools.

They are renaming the Cities, streets, disbanding scorpions, now Bokke, it's like they sit in a bar and think whose in the list and attack, mnxim! this makes me sick.
