For teenagers who have grown up with the internet and mobile phones, technology shapes who they are. Called digital natives, cyberspace is their domain.
But with this freedom, comes danger… and South Africa’s youth are having to navigate the perils of the virtual world.
Studies in South Africa have shown that the average age of first exposure to porn is 11 and that 80 percent of 15 to 17-year-olds have had "multiple hard-core exposures".
Kids are becoming sexualized much earlier and imitating what they see on line. More and more teenagers are filming themselves having sex, or taking nude pictures of themselves and spreading them on their phones, via Bluetooth, internet or Mxit.
This week’s Special Assignment looks at how this risky sexual behaviour plays straight into the hands of the Child Pornography industry.
