I’m no virgin no more – this is my first blog!!!!!!!!
These are my 1st impressions/observations on the state of south african music on TV.
I recently came back from the states after being away for a year. I stay at a friend’s place, who has the cheap DSTV package (I forgot its name), those without DSTV – please tell me how do you survive with free TV (SABC1, 2, 3 & Etv?), naturally, my body is still on the US time zone and couldn’t fall asleep. Decided to check out what was on tv, I managed to stop on SABC1 to watch a program called Music Lounge, they were playing the current international hits, the likes of Leona Lewis (great album by the way – this girl will be bigger that Beyonce – watch the space), Raheem DeVaughn(the boy can sing), Mariah Carey (with her low class hooker outfits), Ashanti (check the Ultimate on Metrofm between 12-3, they currently have her new Album – “The Declaration” as the Album of the week), Usher (I hear there’s trouble in Paradise with uMagriza), Jordin (Umhle sana and you can sing - she’s doing well shame for an Idol winner), Lyfe Jenning (he has looks like he has never been in Jail), Alicia keys the Lesbo.
Considering the fact that I spend more than R3000 per year buying SA music I was starting to get annoyed when an hour went by without seeing a local video, until they started playing south African female artists, Bongi Dube (she might not know how to dance but the girl has talent), The Diva Thandiswa (God knows when will she release new material), is’Xhosana u Zonke (doesn’t she have a new video?) The late bloomer Siphokazi (can you believe she’s the same age as Nkosazana Zuma?), the blinger Nhlanhla from Mafikizolo (its true when they say money can make a person beautiful), KB with a wig that’s so 70s (now I know why Husby left you for Drugs), the Thandiswa wanna-be Camagwini (I can’t say much about your video cause your face paintings tortured me) Aya (her video reminded me of green-market sq in cape town – there’s no close up pic of her face on the video – does she have acne problems? I couldn’t understand the plot of her video though. Then they started to play Afro pop, one of the videos they played was Sfiso from TS Records, bhuti you can sing there’s no doubt about that maar your dance moves are so MC Hammer days, and you can only get away with them at a Methodist church yako Kasie (Somizi – there’s a job for you). Theo from Boom Shaka – you have a great Album bhuti but this idea of having 1 video for 2 songs does not work for everyone.
About myself – I’m just one of those who are proudly and loudly South African (oh by the way my love for mzansi nearly got me into trouble with the bunch of hooligans from Cameroon who were in NY – thank GOD I told them Babalwa Mneno was my sister) Babs I owe you girl - lol .
On a serious note - I love south African music, I even buy CD’s just for the sake of supporting our local musicians, a friend of mine was shocked to learn that I shipped Arthur’s cd all the way to the US. Yep I’m that passionate about our local musicians. So I will dedicate this blog to south African music, and will try to share my experiences and encounters of Mzansi’s music with you TVSA bloggers.
Please do reply – it will break my heart if no one replies!!!!!!!!!!!!
