Ain't letting go!

I've been inflicted with the disease of KEEPING. I can't not keep stuff and struggle to throw stuff away. Whatever it is, i have a sample of it:
old school reports,
pictures of people i have lost contact with and would have nothing to say to if i bumped into them at a taxi rank
old letters and postcards
invitations-they get better with time that's for sure
sms'-sent and received
old payslips-dating back to my first job
receipts dating back years
handbags i no longer use and that are not in a usable condition in any case
pens that have run out of ink-i used to collect pens-
the biggest collection is the Standard Bank pen
Bra's i no longer wear and some underwear that has over the years become sizes TOO small LOL!

Of all the things i've kept, there's one item of clothing i believe in my heart of hearts that i will wear again and it's my denim skirt!

skitr
There's just something about this skirt that makes me feel alive! Sure, it doesn't fit me anymore but each time i'm on a diet i slip-okay i squeeze and shove myself-into it and use it as a measurement of inch/kilo loss. I went on my first date with current partner in my denim skirt. This skirt has seen me through many picnics, many work functions, many summers and winters, has embraced me while i danced to all sorts of music, has received tender loving care through it's not so many washes and certainly minimal ironing. This skirt has a big part in my history-it is a big part of me and i am not letting it go. There have been charity drives at work where i have parted with old clothing and i have not had the heart to part with my beloved skirt!

This skirt has pride of place in my wardrobe-no other item of clothing shares its hanger-it stares at me and even winks at me in the mornings and in the evenings just before i go to bed. If my house burned down, this skirt is definitely the first thing i would save.

Then there are these pair of shoes:

boots

Who hasn't owned a pair???? It's smelly, bent out of shape, scruffy was uncomfortable to walk in but i loved  my Docs and am not parting with them anytime soon!

wedgie
The signature wedge! When other kids were giving each other wedgies, i was collecting wedges! My best friend at high school was very tall and the only way to not feel short was to buy wedges-this became a habit and i have one last pair in my wardrobe that has survived years of decluttering!!

So, yeah i suffer from KEEPER syndrome and i'm not looking for a cure!

i think i used to have the syndromme/disease/disorder call it what ever but i have since learnt to let go but there are some items i still cant let go of unless my mother sneaks in my bedroom and donate them to charity. like the shirt i am wearing today my mother brought it from the US in 98.it has an iron burn mark on the buttons and whenver i wear it people tell me that i have something on my shirt and i have to explain. its an all season shirt that fits well with pants and skirt and i have tried to get somethimg similar from the shops but to no avail- until i get a replacement i refuse to let go.

i keep a memory box for those treasured moments in my life.

You must be joking, those things are ancient, why mara. I thought i was bad but you are worst case. i still have my pregnancy test kit fron 2years ago, hospital bands for the baby. I moved with them from flat to flat. I dont think its a habit that is difficult to let go of. The oldest sms i have dates back from 19 Dec 2004. Bras & panties are a big no-no, i just cannot keep them as soon they look hideous its off to the bin.

I'm the exact opposite...I hate clutter generally so I get rid of stuff very easily. Up to a point where I'll need something in future and then remember ooops, I threw it away. It can be painful but atleast I have a peaceful space around me.

Cassetes that we taped songs on Mhlobo wenene fm!

I just looked at her and asked 'Izohlala phi yonke le junk?' She's refusing to let go! Hay mina i throw stuff away and i'll secretly get rid of that junk one by one! By the time she notices its too late. I hope she's not online!

Cnglemom__well dear I'm sure you'ld strugle. I always fight with my mom when I'm back home. And my bf does not allow me into his study anymore. I threw away these papers once - I was helping him clear it out....they were shrunk papers just on top of the desk...turns out they were purchase aggrements for his car...
I'm really bad.

MIssK...do it girl, you can't leave with books in the house, its either human beings or papers_unless you have a huge library where you can store everything in nicely without it getting on the way.

MissK, LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's not clutter man, those things have sentimental value-finish and klaar and the worst thing you can do is throw stuff away behind her back-please do not!! You've been warned!

holding on to old stuff is not very healthy Tox, you need a cure lol

I find it interesting that I am the EXACT opposite, I'm always cleaning up my closet and giving staff away. I just search what I have not used in the past 6 months and then I'd know that I have to give it away...I just put them in a huge plastic bag and hit the road, once on the streets I'll see exactly who i have to give that junk to. and it just gives me so my fulfilment to see the look on their faces.

This sunday I was doing a story of this other hospice in Joburg's CBD, and I know they will be getting something from my next "cleaning up session".

As for SMSes and E-mails...I delete as soon as I've read it, as long as it did not contain numbers or names that I will have to follow up on.

I delete, I destroy and i throw away...this for me serves as a reminder that i'm creating room for something better

My sister cleans my closet by stealing my stuff otherwise, aziyindawo.  But when I'm feeling depressed I throw things away only to retrive them if I'm lucky ( the rubbish bin people haven't taken them).

We had a charity drive at work last year and I gave away some clothes.  They kept them in a storeroom ja you guessed right, I went back there for my stuff and offered them money. I had to buy back my own clothes!

Shocking ne?

Hayi Feza you make is sound as easy as 1,2,3 steps-----i'd probably leave the bag of clothing in my car and all those items would slowly but SURELY make their way back into my oldrob.

Nice one Tox .... i used to hold on to things way back, until my mother decided to clean our oldrob when we were at school. and 1 day i saw one girl from my neghbourhood wearing same dress as mine, i went back home to look for my dress and i couldnt find it, i asked if anyone has seen it and mama told me that she gave them to needy people, when i told her i still loved my dress, she told that i haven't been wearing it for two years so she knew that i dont like it anymore ....there was nothing i cud do. and as time goes by i also learnt to let go of something that i dont use, sometimes even if i still use and love the item, once a person ask for it, i fail to hold on to it.

and now i cant keep something that i dont use, even the things that i still like

The strange thing is if i buy a clothing item i have to wear it the following day or else it will stay untouched for  days and months  i would just look at it and leave it there!
