5 reasons why i hate FaceBook

I know Face Book (FB) is the “Social Networking Tool” that everyone is on. When I got the invite to join, I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into, what I was opening myself to, so I just joined. Three months into my registration, I am really considering “killing” my profile and here are my reasons:

1. Your privacy is invaded – I mean there are all those privacy policies and you are able to select who gets to see your profile, pictures etc. But if a friend has pictures of you, and they decide to post those pictures on FB, now even people you don’t know have access to your pictures.

2. There is just too much choice – Don’t get me wrong, I love choice, but FB just has too much of it. Too many links to click on, too many requests to respond to. All that does to me is leave me confused, lost, irritable and just downright miserable.
3. Blasts from the past, suddenly want to be friends – People from the past are exactly that, people from the past. If I wanted to “stay in touch” with them, I wouldn’t have “lost touch” with them. FB has just made it all that much easier for me to be found, from those I have been hiding from…eish

4. It makes me look dull – When I look at people’s profiles, pictures, friends, reading about their weekends, what they are up to, it leaves me feeling that my life is not nearly as exciting as other people’s.

5. It takes away the human aspect in relationships – who needs to meet with anyone when we can just hook up over the net? I want to have real conversations, see real expressions, and experience real emotions. FB can easily do away with that.

I know a lot of people are addicted to FB, mara mina "dankie ngi yabonga"

Hey Dimago - so interesting, just last night I was saying that I'm not crazy about FB either - feel the same as all your reasons. Also I get stressed 'cos you'll get messages or different things on it, not have time to respond and then you're left feeling you're being rude when you can't get to replying etc. Ditto ditto there being too much to do - if your profiles not always up to date or filled with stacks of things it's like you end up feeling you're not "in" enough on it or you're uncool type thing.

I fully agree about the picture thing too - no-one gets your permission to use whatever pics they want and it blurs the lines between what;s no probs for the world to see and what you'd like to keep between friends.

Also I can't help being suspicious that someone's using all the info for something - like whoever's running it - there's something about it that feels corporate, 'spesh 'cos of how there's no face behind its creation. How do we know we can trust them with our info? I think it's 'cos I heard it was created by the US goverment to keep tabs on everyone, LOL! I don't reckon it's true but I still can't help feeling suspicious generally.

Yhu....I feel you guys, I feel you.
I've only been back there for less than a month but it feels long. I don't wanna offend anyone so all I'm gonna say is to all my facebook friends, I love you but I gotta leave you. It has defs connected me with other people I'd lost contact with but I'm leaving man, it's too much. All those applications that you must add....invitations, group invites, wara wara wara...it's too hectic for me.
I'm staying till 31 October and then I'm out.

I also don't like how people post their "album" covers as profile pics, you get a friend request from a "celebrity", you get excited kanti it's not even them, it's people who are promoting them that are actually running those profiles.

I tend to look at things people normally don't so one of them schlebs has a profile there, for someone as BUSY as this person is, there is too much action on that profile so I wondered where this person would find so much time to be on facebook so ke as I was going about my business, I notice that the date of birth on their profile is wrong.
I send them an sms asking whats up with the wrong DOB on the profile, the celeb says his/her fans change stuff there so from there ke I'm not even bothering with that. Needless to say, the date has now been corrected.
Plus that person seems to be joining each & every group on Facebook so yeah, before you get all excited about a "celeb" adding you as a friend....maybe it's not really that celeb after all.

I recently got a friend request from Jika Majika and I was like ...that's it!!!! Why not have a Jika Majika group & invite people to it rather??

Worst that ever happend to me was a message from some random white dude. (John Butler, block his ass). The msg said "Hi im into black kinky girls, are u kinky" Obawo, oko ndingangenanga kwi computor screen yami and throttle the shitless life out of him"

But yeah shugga I feel u there. A few weeks back I ws so xcited to get a request from Trevor Noah. U shud have seen me. I wanted to click confirm immediately but then I thought to check out his profile.. just to see what Im workin with, (similarities that could lead us to the isle). Then BOMB. I notice his work section.. this imposter wrote.. doggy style for position. I was like voestek. If you are gonna fake sumtin atleast do it properly.

O and there was kaizer Jnr.. Lowo ke ndamupoxa. zange aphinde.

But there are some real folks. (id like to believe) Fresh, Lupi, Pabi, Dj Sbu, Sizwe Dhlomo although he doesnt update his profile

yeah guys...i'm feelin your point....but mna i'm loving fb....as long as you can manage to keep it "intimate"...this thing of having too many friends that you hardly communicate to is ish...i've decided that if i dont keep touch with my friends atleast for a week then i should remove them from my profile....

i've connected with people i've been googling for the past seven years and i cant tell you how it feels to hook up with them....i've turned down many applications as i feel some of them are a bit stupid and i try not to invite people to applications that i think would piss them off a bit.

so in a nutshell i'm loving fb like a muf....

Nna ke khinya ke the thousand invitations and groups..! Not so long ago I got this other one I think its are you interested...boy I have no clue whats going on there I see people I dont even know interested inme.STALKER ALERT... DAmn Warewolfs invitations..di gardens I wonder how the hell you can plant on the net..

I only go there when I get an email notification...then get all these things huh. Personally am not addicted...there is only one addiction I cant cure and that am actually smoking it now.....TVSA GOLD!

Last week i was in a restaurant waiting for my order,so just to kill time i just paged through a magazine(forgott the name)when i saw this heading :5 REASONS WHY I HATE FACE BOOK,the article was written by a white chick, she wrote excately what you (Dimago)wrote,so i a m just wondering...is it s coincidence or did you copy her article?????

I love facebook. I love facebook. I love facebook. I will not leave it or even condemn it... I chose to join it and do what fb peeps do so I am there!

My profile is secret and I choose who has access to it. That's how I like it. I don't have dodgy friends and my friends trust my request for "privacy" No-one from my past has invaded my privacy so I will not worry. Maybe it's because the people know! So Dimago, tell them - blast from the past stay there!

Some of my in-laws and friends are all over the world (Russia, DRC, France, UK, Mali,Canada) so fb is helping us "see" each other and communicate. I don't have to get my email clogged with undelivered pics because of no space in their mailbox.

I will not hold it against anyone that it doesn't make sense to. BUT will encourage peeps to watch who takes a pic of them, and the circumstances of the pic,you do not want to end up like Linda Sibiya on my oh moments blog!

@ Buttabee - FB has just been unmanageable for me, so my experience hasnt been good. The funniest and best thing i saw was a pic of me and some friends taken in Amsterdam at the sex museum and we were sitting on top of a giant penis (LOL). I hadn't seen that picture in years, and to suddenly see just killed me... See what i mean about people just posting pics of you....

reasons I hate it:

1. the applications!!!! there are so many of them...the other day i saw a MYGRAVEYARD application..dang! I'm removing mygarden and even my aquarium and adding it!!

2. The quizzes......they are the reason I stay behind in the evenings pretending to work...friends' quiz, ilike quiz, heroes quiz..any quiz u can think of must be there!

3. I hate that when I comment on someone's pic, my comment appears on the news feed and anyone that's my friend automatically accesses the pic i'm commenting on--the privacy issue at play here BUT on the flip side, I love that I can get into strangers' albums because of this little loop hole!

4. Keeping up with celebs' albums...iyooo there are vain people out there, posting pics every hour! Takes time to scroll through the albums (and i do make time !!).

5. Celebs not updating their profiles--eish if u're a celeb and i've added u as a friend u gotta know the difference btw a facebook friend and meet my needs damnit! Add pic, change your status, comment on other people's page....DO SOMETHING!!

So all the above are reasons I'm not leaving facebook plus the ff:

i)I've just reconnected with a friend I went to boarding school with, who inspired my facebook alias! I haven't given up on the hope that all the others will soon catch on to FB and find me!!!!

ii) It really is a social networking tool for me as I have met and made friends with people I never would ever have met out there. There's a friend from Cape Town who's really intelligent and I learn something new from this person.

iii) The funny groups created---there's a group called "I use my cellphone to see in the dark" now if that's not ridiculous I don't know what is! But the thing is FB allows one to be ridiculous!

iv) When peeps on TVSA can't upload their pics, I can access them on FB (BBA eviction pics he he he!!) and keep up with their activities if they don't blog about them!

v) I'm addicted and there's no way I'm inactivating my profile......I havce never been stalked although I have received friend requests from people I have never met before but hey I jsut accept their requests cause there's not much in my page i don't WANT THE public to SEE!

I also love the poking, the sucker-punching, the drop kicking when I don't have anything to say to people. Damn, out there when I see someone and don't know what to say the only thing I can do is smile!

To sum up my love for FB: everyone has a say in deciding what to put on their page. Set privacy settings that allow only certain people to view your pics, your details etc or don't put them up.

Eish, Facebook, bathong. lawd knows im on there almost everyday. BUT the applications and invites suck! There's The Wall, Fun Wall, Super Wall. (and the point is?) So i only have the normal wall. I dont need people forwarding me pictures of fairies and whatever.
The Zombie, Werewolves, Aquarium, etc stupid!

On my page, I have two photos at the moment, coz really, the privacy thing...but I do have a full profile, but thats coz it was long ago when i was still new to Facebook.
I like Facebook, but I dont FB from my phone, or go crazy if I dont log on. I hate those damn notifications that take up the whole page, and seeing other people's updates.

Id quit MySpace, and that damn boring Hi5 any day, but I think Im gonna keep my FB for a long time...

Re; the privacy issues - Even if you were NOT on facebook and friends post pictures of you - the world is still gonna see them, you wont, but they will. Just becuase you disappear from FB doesnt mean FB is gonna disappear.
Besides, anyone can post pics of you anywhere, not just FB.

Re; too much choice - NEW ONE. Notmally we complain about too little choice. The secret here is to select those applications that suit you and ur needs. if you don't know what it does and it looks interesting. add it. if you dont like it. DELETE it. The choice is yours. Don't feel guilty because someone sent it to you so u dont want to hurt their feelings. Trust me, no friendship will be broken if you diable the garden application.

BLASTS form the pasts: I have caught up with friends that i lost touch with and am VERY VERY glad. those that i didnt want to speak to in the first place, i either didn't accept or blocked them if they become pesky. Once again MY CHOICE. I have a mind of my own.

making you look dull: dull is good - means no drama. Besides, who gives a *bleep!* what anyone else thinks. As long as you know you had a great time over the weekend - who cares if they're traipsing all over the worl. As long as you're doing what YOU want to be doing, who gives a rats arse over what anyone else thinks.

For instance - my brother lives in JHB and i dont see him often. However i can still "hangout" with him on FB. It really doesnt have to be a pain. Sure, it's time consuming and if you have anything else that you could be doing, i agree, go out and do it rather. But isn't nice to log on to see that someone has thought of you - and how do you know? those million of so-called "stupid" pokes that you get from friends.

FB is up to u to make it work or not. Some people accept friend requests from everyone for the sake of having lots of friends.There are people with Celeb names and surnames whose profiles I dont buy hence the only Celeb friends I know are the ones I realy met and liked and keep in contact with(and they are not many). Know ur friends and maintain ur closeness. FB works for me for now...but I gues the time for me to leave will be soon, very soon coz not a lot of My true buddies are there. I have a friend I've long seen though who just invited me to overseas...so FB did something for me right there...so Yippee I'll be off to visit her (partly) very soon (and yes I trust her and I know exactly where her home is!).

Eish..i have a luv and hate relationship with Facebook. I love it coz i re-connected with friends that i had lost contact with over the years and it allows me to act ridiculous by kicking, poking, bitch slappin' & tickling them when i'm bored.
Mara facebook is not that userfriendly, i despice the look and the applications just tend to push ma buttons. I'm mad at a friend of ma brother who posted a group pic of us taken after a performance with our names and he neva asked fo permission. So even if you left fb, your friends can still post ur pic wit name tags without ur consent.

It is a take it or leave it situation,some things work for some people and doesnt work for others and that is not crime.it is up to you whether you choose to use it to your own advantage or not. I fully agree with Amazingly,the choice is yours,ga re sa buyer skelema.As much as i love Tvsa i also love FB FOR THERE IS SOMETHING THAT I GAIN FROM ALL OF THEM.

Ama you have made some valid points although I also see where Tashi and Dimago are coming from.

I don't have many friends on FB, haven't been there in awhile actually bit its good to know one's friend is thinking of you whether they're poking fun or sending you lots and lots of booze.

Basically its your choice whether you want to become addicted or not, how much you want people to see, etc. Choice people Choice and a healthy balance between internet networking and reality.

I havent read the article and replies but I USED TO HATE FACEBOOK, too....

Nami i just registered coz a friend told me it was cool... They told me i'd be addicted. Two weeks into the whole thing I was just totally irked by the whole experienced... It felt like an overcrowded room. So, i deactivated my account.
But i just went back now...and its not like TVSA(which is my first love that im totally addicted to and obsessed about) , but its really not that bad. some things are still Greek to me, though...

The only thing i hate is the friend requests. Then i think i once clicked something and i have this "meet new people" thing going on.... if anyone knows how to cure that, please help.

I am struggling with logging on to the site cause at work it is just sooo slow & using my phone is finishing my minutes!!! I just joined so maybe when i get the hang of it i will know what you guys are talking about. about TVSA, hey i am glad they are not aware of it. otherwise it would have been blocked like di youtube and myspace. But gaad i just love TVSA.

@ Cody - It's not u, most of us are experiencing the same problem, there are just so many inkingaz at TVSA. One moment we're gold, the next we're black, we get kicked out half the day, recieve error mesg's left right & center, their clock has never been on time. Ngidikiwe nayiyo mani.

hahahahahha u remind me of this one fiends that I met at TVSA and we are also on FB we poke each other all the time just for fun. Mina I see poking as: "Hey there or I just thought of u".......it's silly I know, but that's FB for u!!!!

I ain't leavin FB anytime soon, i've mastered it very well, i log in on my fone and i don't get to see those invitations and extra applications, i just log on to wish fwends Happy Besday, change my status when there's something exciting in ma life, and to keep tabs on some fwends.......

It was a little bit of a snag when i used to log on the pc, even then you have a choice to accept the applications and invites....i ignored everything.
So just stop complaining, reject/ignore invites and applications or just delete your profile, FB ain't for e'body vele.............
If a blast from the past invites you just press ignore and they'll remain in the past, restrict access to your profile and get on with your life............and stop posing for pictures then..............

I am enjoying fb at the moment. I changed my name(I use my second name which many don't know) and surname. So it's not easy for people to find me.

I have 30 friends and I have a choice to delete those who don't add value.

I am not and never will be on facebook, for all the reasons mentioned above, plus I am not a very technological person so I don't like cracking my skull about stuff. The main reason I'm not on facebook is that the first time I heard about facebook I was told it helps you connect with people or friends in your past and that for me was enough motivation never to join because the people in my past are there for a reason and that is axactly where I want to keep them. If anyone is not in my life now that means I just don't want them in my life qha. I could imagine all those toxic friends I struggled to get rid of coming back,sho never!
