On 3rd Degree this week:

Episode title: Suffer Little Children
Broadcast date: 2 October, 2007

What would you do if your child came home from day care with unexplained bruises, sores or even broken bones? Worse, what would you do if the woman you trusted to look after your little one couldn’t give you a credible explanation?

This is the dilemma three mothers faced.

In 2001 Lea van der Merwe made the important decision to remove her then 6 month old child from the care of a Pretoria North day care mother. He had bruises and temporary paralysis in his arm.

In 2005, baby Damian was also removed from the same day mother’s care. The one and a half year old’s foot was broken in four places.

To date there have been 10 similar complaints against the same day care mother. Then things got worse with reports of one fatality.

This week 3rd degree investigates what is going on and why is this woman still being allowed to look after young children.
